From the Magnet School Director
This week in ELA our students are diving into the world of Prosthetics. Through Informational Articles and movie clips they have been given the opportunity to view a different world of movement with animals and humans. They will be creators and design a picture book of a character with a limb difference. I am really looking forward to reading the work of our young authors. In Science class, they are working on their persuasive skills as they create commercials for their design challenge. Their task is to persuade people to switch to tidal energy as a more clean renewable fuel.
Many of you have asked to purchase another purple badge shirt. Please use this link if you would still like to purchase one. HOBBY MAGNET SWAG Please select the 7th grade option as we set this up to sell to next year's class as well. This will help us keep the merchandise separated between the two groups. I recommend that you size up a little bit to be able to wear them into the fall as well.

Dismissal at the end of the day:
Wells Fargo bank across Huebner from Hobby Middle School has asked that their parking lot not be used for student pickup after school. Recently they have seen an increase in traffic at this time and have asked Hobby to communicate with our families.
Lower parking lot:
Please review the attached photo of our lower parking lot located on the corner of Vance Jackson and Huebner.
From your Academic Dean - Ms. Christina Lora
Dear Parents/Guardians:
Our campus was one of many selected by the Texas Education Agency to participate in a 2024 State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) Reading Language Arts Field Test in Grade 6 and Grade 8. On Thursday, February 8, your 6th grade and 8th grade son/daughter will be participating in this assessment.
Students are to bring their Northside provided Chromebook (fully charged) and charging cable to school on testing days. Students who have not checked out a Northside Chromebook will be provided a device on testing days. Students are not allowed to use personal technology devices including cell phones during state assessments.
Counselor's Connection
We also conducted personal health and safety classes with our seventh grade Hawks. Our lesson focused on the physical and mental health effects drugs have on youth. We also reviewed legal and school consequences of vaping. Please continue these conversations with our Hawks so that they have the tools and information to make the choices that are best for them. Also, feel free to reach out to the Hobby Counseling Department if you want more information or need resources regarding this or any other topic. Next week, school counselors will present personal health and safety guidance lessons to our eighth grade Hawks during their MAPS/Comm Apps classes.
February 12 - 16 we are also observing Random Acts of Kindness Week at Hobby!
Mental Health Matters! Be sure to visit the Hobby Middle School Mental Wellness webpage to obtain mental health resources.
Please check out the February edition of our Hobby Counseling Newsletter if you’d like to see the info that is going out to families. Thanks!

From the Nurse
Parents please do not send your child ill to school. Anything over 100.0 is considered a fever/temperature, please keep them at home. They are most contagious when they are having a fever/high temperature. Stay well hydrated and eat well. See a clinician/physician if symptoms worsen.
Stay warm and dress accordingly. Layer your clothes to stay warm. It is easier to remove a layer of clothing than to try finding clothes while in school to layer on.
