South Milford Moments
Weekly News Friday 6.3.20
World Book Week
The children have enjoyed taking part in devouring the special menu at lunchtime. Many children have pushed themselves to try new things which has been brilliant to see.
We have also been lucky enough to have all experienced learning about one of these cultures in more depth through dance. Bethe Marchant (Principal) from Bethany Lauren Dance Company has delivered an hour’s dance workshop to each year group either focusing on Chinese traditional dance, African tribal dance or Bollywood dancing. The children have all tried really hard with embracing these aspects of another culture and learned a lot!
Finally, thank you so much to the parents and carers who came to support their children in the reading comprehension hunt today. A lot of fun was had by all!
Sports Hall Athletics
We are very proud of the 23 children who represented Selby district in the county final (level 3 event). The children had already competed in two stages in order to get to this point. The children showed great enthusiasm and resilience throughout. The stakes were raised with the introduction of penalty points for various manoeuvers. The competition was tough, yet the children maintained a supportive sportsmanship attitude to all teams throughout. Please check twitter for the photos.
The scores are as follows:
Points: 462 Ryedale and Whitby- Stakesby (9th)
Points: 544 Craven- Glusburn (8th)
Points: 556 Hambleton- Sowerby (7th)
Points: 576 Richmond- Richmond Methodist (6th)
Points: 594 Scarbrough- Seamer and Irton (5th)
Points: 612 York- Archbishop of York (4th)
Points: 618 Harrogate- Pannal (3rd)
Points: 626 York- Robert Wilkinson (2nd)
Points: 632 Selby- South Milford (1st)
Due to being first place the children won their very own gold medal. Sadly, there are no regional/national events following this one. Please take your time to admire the trophy - it will be placed in the front entrance.
COVID-19
I am writing to provide you with an update with regard Coronavirus (COVID-19).
We continue to follow DfE and Public Health England (PHE) advice.
All schools in the UK now receive daily updates from the DfE and we also have a direct advice line should we wish to ask questions for example with regard families returning from affected regions. This advice line is also available for parents:
Staff, parents/carers and young people can contact the government helpline as follows:
Phone: 0800 046 8687
Email: DfE.coronavirushelpline@education.gov.uk
Opening hours: 8am to 6pm (Monday to Friday)
Across all of the schools in our STAR Multi-Academy Trust, we have purchased hand sanitiser systems which should be installed by early next week. These are in ADDITION to good ongoing hand hygiene and will be installed centrally in our school to add an additional layer of hygiene to what we have already put in place. The system we are installing uses a non-alcohol based product which is suitable for use with children. It only needs applying once per day. We would like to ‘assume consent’ for this to take place, but should you wish for your child NOT to use the sanitiser, please contact the School Office via the usual routes. To find out more about what we are using, please follow the link below:

I will continue to keep in touch on this matter as it evolves and as ever, should you wish to discuss, please do get in touch via the School Office.

Medical Maverick Assembly
We had a great start to the half term with Toby from Medical Maverick. We learnt all about different roles within a hospital and tested out some impressive medical equipment. We saw inside someone's eye, listened to heart beats and blood flow and also used a special light to see all of Toby’s veins! It was interesting listening to various heartbeats to decide which ones were healthy. It was a great start to our new whole school PSHE unit ‘Healthy Me’
Sir Scallywag trip
Reception and KS1 are getting very excited for our trip to see Sir Scallywag next Friday (13th March) and we are preparing the songs so that we can be part of the concert!
The children will be leaving school quite quickly after registration, so please make sure that you are on time to come in at 8:55. The children will be returning back to school about 12:30 so lunches can be ordered as normal, and we will have a slightly later lunch.
As it is Sport Relief day on this day too, please send your children in normal uniform for the trip in the morning, and sports clothing in a bag to be able to get changed into after the trip.
Please make sure that you have contributed on Parent Pay so that this trip can go ahead.
