Special Education Parent Mentor Program
The Special Education Department of Columbus City Schools has parents of children with special needs on staff to answer questions. Our goal is to help parents to become effective partners in education for their children with special needs by encouraging parent/professional partnerships.
The Parent Mentors Office provides the following services for you and your family:
- Describe special education programs (preschool, school age and transition into adult life) offered by Columbus City Schools.
- Explain the Individual Education Program (IEP) process and the parents role in the development of the IEP, as well as attending meetings with parents until they are familiar with the process.
- Organize and conduct workshops, and support groups for parents and professionals.

HOLIDAY HAPPENINGS
Free Thanksgiving Lunch
The Salvation Army is offering pre-made Thanksgiving lunch November 23 from 11:00 am - 12:15 pm. Meals will be served in-person to each person present. No take-out is available. Several companies came together to make this possible for those that may not be able to provide a Thanksgiving meal this year for themselves or their family.

Schools Out Program
Youth need opportunities for fun, engaging enrichment experiences when school is out. Columbus Recreation and Parks Department’s Schools Out program opens recreation centers for extended hours during Columbus City Schools upcoming fall and winter breaks.

FREE SCHOOL CLOTHES FROM CHARITY NEWSIES
Children are eligible for one set of clothing per school year.
Clothing Packets will consist of one winter coat, knit hat and gloves, 3 pairs of pants, 3 shirts, 6 pairs of socks and underwear. All clothing will conform with the published uniform and/or dress code policy of each child’s school. For schools that allow a uniform only, a uniform voucher will be provided in lieu of the shirts and pants, as applicable.
Clothing is non-exchangable. Please select the proper sizes for your children.
All children are to be on the same application. Families are allowed one application per school year. Children are allowed one application per school year. For ANY changes to your application, (change of school or clothing sizes) please contact us at application@charitynewsies.com with the necessary changes. Be sure to include the card number from your confirmation email. Please allow 24-hours (Mon-Fri, 9am-12pm) for a response.
All clothing applications will be on-line only. Applications will be accepted until they reach 15,000 (they are currently at 13,000). No in person applications will be offered at their headquarters or public libraries as in previous years.
Curbside Pick-up. Children do NOT need to be present in order to pick up the clothing packets. Upon arriving, please stay in your car and a Newsies representative will come to you. Please have your card number from your confirmation email available for them to check. If you are unable to make your appointed time, please forward your email confirmation to someone who can pick-up on your behalf. Please wear a mask for this process. Clothing not claimed by the Friday following your appointment date will be returned to inventory and the application will be forfeited.
Eligibility Requirements:
- Parent/legal guardian and child must be residents of Franklin County.
- Children must be actively enrolled in an in-person school in grades k-12.
- Application is to be filled out by the parent/legal guardian of the child(ren)
- One application per child per school year.
- One application per family per school year.
- All qualifying children are to be on the same application.
- We do not clothe home schooled or foster children.
Information requested on our Application:
- Last 4 digits of Social Security Number or TFIN of parent or legal guardian.
- Last 4 digits of Social Security Number of each child to be clothed.
- The name of the school your child(ren) are attending.
- Clothing sizes for each child.
- Email address. All correspondences will be via email.
CRIS - Refugee Services
CRIS is an independent non-profit organization that serves the refugee and immigrant populations in Central Ohio. We have over 50 staff members from all over the world who speak many different languages. Our wide array of programs and services aim to facilitate sustained self-sufficiency and successful integration for the people we serve.
Among other things, CRIS is a refugee resettlement agency. As an affiliate of Church World Service, we have a cooperative agreement with the Department of State to directly receive and place refugees in our community.
Somali Community Association
The Somali Community Association of Ohio (SCAO) is one of Central Ohio's leading voice for Somali immigrants and a grass-roots organization serving the Somali refugee community. SCAO advocates and promotes self-sufficiency for families through employment, education, cultural and social support, and economic empowerment. They serve elders, working adults, teens and children at no charge. Click on the link below for a full list of services.
Our Lady of Guadalupe Center - Catholic Social Services
Through the Our Lady of Guadalupe Center, Catholic Social Services works to reduce poverty by addressing its root causes within the immigrant Hispanic community concentrated on the west side of Columbus—a population that is growing and experiences disproportionate poverty.
The Center provides services including a food pantry, English as a Second Language (ESL) classes, nutrition classes, preventative health screenings, legal and immigration consultations and referrals, and comprehensive case management.
