Panther Post
January 16th-21st
Hello Lopez Families,
On Wednesday, we took the 8th graders to Reagan High School for a tour of their future campus. They were able to walk the campus and see everything from classrooms, where to eat and even where the attendance office is. They did a good job acclimating them so they would not be so lost on their first day of school. We also got to see performances from the many groups available for their students to join. We even got to meet their new Athletic Director and head football coach, Mr. Hamilton. I have known him for a while, he is a great person and mentor to young men. As always, our students were well behaved and we received many compliments. I know they are excited to have them the next four years.
This week we begin to think about next year's courses. Make sure to go to one of the parent night meetings detailed in the flier I sent out. This will help you make the best choices for next year. The meetings are listed below in case you missed the flier.
Sincerely,
Mr. Wernli

Leader In Me
We are excited that you will have the opportunity to view your child’s Lead Binder and experience a discussion about your child grades, goals and expectations. A discussion with your child empowers the him/her to direct and report on his/her progress at Lopez. Teachers at Lopez use the 7 Habit by Sean Covey to promote a positive life style of planning, goal setting and finding a balance. Bringing the binder home will allow your family an opportunity to discuss the habits at home. During the discussion process students will report on academic progress, share goals, and report on assessment data. It is our goal that the student-led conference and reflection process will help the students take personal responsibility for their progress and learning.
Students are required to bring the binder back to their 7th period teacher by Friday January 20th.
Ideas for PARENTS
- Express positive interest about the time spent together.
- Express pride in growth and progress. Celebrate improvement and successes.
- Ask questions .
- Be positive, offering to help in areas where improvement is needed (suggesting morning coaching or a tutor)
Possible questions to ask your child
- What do you see as your strengths?
- How can you improve in a particular area? (set up a plan, x to y by when)
- How can we help you at home?
- How can we celebrate how well you have done (keep it simple students;))

Service Hours
Lopez families,
Lopez Panthers should be tracking their service hours. The hours should be tracked in their Leader in Me binder on the service hour log page. They may also track their hours for the PVSA awards website. This consists of time they spend in any type of volunteer role - at school or on their own. This will help them reach their personal goal and will help Lopez complete their school-wide important goal of 10,000 service hours this year.
Instructions on how to enter your service hours can be found at: https://snapguide.com/guides/log-presidents-volunteer-service-award-hours/.
The site for actually putting in your hours is: http://presidentialserviceawards.gov.
Send us a picture of your child in his/her service role and we will display it on a celebrations wall! mvolz@neisd.net or ftobac@neisd.net
We can't wait to see the great ways our Lopez Panthers Serve!
