CDS Phoenix Rising
Cheongna Dalton High School's Weekly Newsletter
September 27th, 2019
From the Assistant Director
I have been extremely impressed with our students so far this year. Every day they wake up earlier than their biological clock tells them to, journey long distances, and arrive at school ready to start another day where they will be challenged to grow and become the best version of themselves. It is a challenge that our students courageously face every day, and they often do so with a smile.
I'm truly inspired by our students' resilience, drive, and fortitude on a daily basis. Still, I want to remind our students that when facing a challenge one does not need to approach it alone. Our volleyball teams are an excellent example of a group of students pushing themselves to be better while reaching out to their coaches and peers for advice. In my career at this school, I have watched numerous students reach out to teachers for help, not only for academic assistance but for life advice, a shoulder to cry on, or organizational strategies. In my experience, those students who reach out for help seem to be healthier, happier and more successful.
As just one of many at this school who have dedicated our lives to helping students get to the next level, I would like to encourage students reach out. When a teacher offers their time, say, "Yes, please!" Not only will this most likely help students, but it will allow all of us to live out our why, our life's purpose.
I know our students will continue to inspire us. As we approach the end of the term and courses start to get more challenging, I hope they will also allow us to lift them up when needed as well!
All the best,
Jason Musselman
Assistant High School Director

Dalton Rising Weekly Roundup
A Look At Art At CDS
"Hello my name is Ty Muennink and I am the HS Visual Art and AP Studio Art teacher here at Dalton. I am looking forward to a very successful year here at CDS for many reasons, the main reason is the students in art all the classes. The students here are willing to adapt and solve problems that I constantly challenge them with. Pictured below is the first challenge they faced, this project challenged the students to find their Who, What, Where, When, and Why. I then place a piece of paper on the Mind maps. The students then were asked to find a design in the lines. Pictures of some final products are shown below. I am thrilled with the willingness for your students to take on new challenges and try new projects. I am happy to say we have an amazing facility and many traditions that have been instilled in the program from the previous teacher. I hope to continue to grow these thoughts and ideas. I plan to foster a great environment to further student artist. As of today you can find our students hard at work on their next Art project not only in the classroom but in the halls and at home. Please help to encourage your student to look into Art. Thank you for taking the time to read this article." - Ty Muennink - Art Teacher
Judge ready? Timer ready?
"The CDS Forensics, or speech and debate team, has seen exponential growth over the past few years, beginning with only a handful of members to 18 for the 2019 - 2020 season. KAIAC Forensics holds four competitions over the school year at four different schools, cultivating a space for students in international schools all over the nation to gather and compete in numerous categories such as oratory, impromptu, prose, and poetry. Continuing last year’s legacy is a new team of captains consisting of Minju Kim, Tammy Lee, and Ryan Shin. The first competition is to be held on October 18th and 19th at Korea International School, followed by another one in November at Seoul International School. The team is looking forward to a fun-filled year to introduce new members to the craft that is public speaking, and begin their journey in the realm of Forensics." - Mrs. Desiree Stant - Drama Teacher

Phoenix Volleyball Recap
Boys:
Yesterday’s match with ICS-P was exciting from beginning to end, and required every bit of all 5 sets to determine the victor. With the momentum constantly swaying back and forth, the match was up for grabs until the very end, when unfortunately, ICS-P came out on top. The defeat to CDS was not because of a lack of effort, as our Phoenix players left everything they had on the court, but a few costly mistakes were enough to turn a victory into a loss.
The boys volleyball program looks to regroup and refocus with a concentration on their passing and attacking leading up to their next match, with Dulwich. With their continued hard work and devotion to the team’s goals, the boys will certainly soon reclaim a winning record, as they are currently sitting at 2-2 at this point in the season.
Girls:
This ended up being a defensive battle, requiring our girls to make stronger passes and have better footwork than they ever needed in the past. Sophomore Jueun Lee led the team with her free ball transitions and movement. That effort was also translated on the stats sheet, as she finished with 11 kills and 10 aces. Junior Rachel Kim also had a great game, as she totaled 18 good serves with 5 aces and 7 kills.
The girls play their 5th game of the season next Wednesday, as they travel to Dulwich.

Updates & General Information
INTRODUCING DALTON TV
Originally, Dalton TV started off with a single division solely dedicated to capturing major school events and filming promotion videos of school events. However, currently, Dalton TV became one of the largest solid media clubs in Dalton with three divisions, Dalton TV, CDSPN, and Yolo Production, dedicated to diverse aspects of the school. Dalton TV also has plans to expand with the addition of another production company coming this Fall.
Dalton TV
As one of Dalton’s longstanding media clubs, the Dalton TV division strives to capture major school events and life around the school. Recently, we captured some captivating shots of the “Tastes of CDS” and “Student Council Election” events. To simply walk you through our production process, we are divided into two teams - the pre-production team and the post-production team. The pre-production team starts with brainstorming ideas, outlining detailed instructions, and scheduling filming dates. After all the groundwork, the post-production team jumps in to assist with filming and editing the video with engaging graphics and sound. We are currently planning new entertaining videos revolving around the life within the CDS community, so stay tuned in for more. Our videos can be streamed from our YouTube channel, so come check us out!
CDSPN
As the sole media club that deals with Dalton sports, CDSPN aims to organize and create sports news regarding player information and highlight moments of each game. CDSPN’s work can be seen from the “Play of the Week” videos which contain a recap of each sporting event and our athletes’ outstanding performances out on the field. Currently, CDSPN is organizing multiple intriguing events that would build up school spirit and enthusiasm during home games. We hope such efforts will build more enthusiasm within the school and attract more students and teachers within the CDS community to come cheer for our team during home games.
Yolo Production
Yolo Productions is the one and only club in Dalton that strives to create drama and comedy films. YOLO Production deals with various genres such as, but not limited to, comedy, romance, or even horror. Our goal is to pursue the enjoyment of media and strengthen school spirit among the CDS community. By implementing topics and genres that students are interested in, we believe that we are able to bring our community together. Initially, we were a group of students who each came together of the common interest: film production or acting. We encourage the members of our club to self-direct the scenes and motion pictures they hope to produce and give the best of us for every video. We have bright prospects and resources to further develop our club and the entire school at the same time.

POLICY REMINDER: School Facilities After School
We would like to remind our community that the school facilities and campus will be closed to non-dorm students and parents at 5pm. This policy is in place for safety and liability reasons. In addition, we hope to create a quiet and focused study area for our students in the Phoenix Cafe.
If you are not a dorm student, please kindly leave campus after school hours. This applies to visitors and parents as well.
For more information please contact the high school office.

Parent Teacher Forum
The backbone of any educational institution is its unique and diverse community. Since I've been here at CDS, one of the things I have wanted to improve in the High School has been communication between teachers / administration and parents. If we are able to strengthen and maintain that aspect of the community then it will certainly benefit our students.
Most established international schools have a strong parent teacher association that enables them to communicate, organize events and provide greater opportunities for its student body. While that is my end goal, I wish to get started slowly through the use of small discussion forums.
These small group will be made up of teachers and parents who will get together to talk, listen and brainstorm. During these meetings, we will focus our attention on specific issues that pertain to our shared interest, student outcomes. I myself will facilitate these discussions to ensure that they are productive and on task. Through hearing a multitude of opinions and perspectives , we can get a better understanding of the issue and make suggestions to the administration about policy and direction.
For this to work, we need to hear from a diverse grouping of parents, from all grades and walks of life. These discussions will be a safe space where both parties can come and speak freely for about an hour per meeting.
If you want to participate in the discussion , please fill out the form below.
Parent Teacher Forum Survey (Survey)
We really hope that our parents can take some time during their day to join us on October 3rd. We will review our norms and start brainstorming a list of items that require our communities attention.
TOGETHER we can make this a great place to learn and grow for our students/children! I look forward to working with you!
