Magic Realism, Big Fish Project

In the movie, Big FIsh...

Will says of August in the movie, Big Fish, "I didn't see anything of myself in my father, and i don't think he saw anything of himself in me. We were like strangers who knew each other very well"

Do you think you are like your parents in someways why or why not?

When it comes to my father, I am told that I am his spitting image. He gave me his big blue eyes, and his dark brown hair. As for personality, I could say that he gave me my love for music. My sense of humor primarily comes from him. Unfortunately, I'd have to say when it comes to his temper, that I have that as well. We also share the same lack of patience gene.

When it comes to my mom, I have her features from the nose on down. When it comes to personality, my mom is always going out of her way to help people, which is what I aim to do. We have the same warped sense of humor. We can literally laugh so hard that we have tears streaming down our faces. My mom is like everyone's mother. If anyone needs anything she is always there to help if she can. I try to be that way too. My mom and I can talk about anything and she is my best friend.

What kinds of things often inhibit relationships children have with their parents?

I believe there are many things that could prevent a child to be close with their parents and vise versa.

  • Miscommunication
  • Lack of respect
  • When boundaries are pushed
  • Entitlement
  • Addictions
  • Being stubborn
  • Lack of structure
  • Too much structure
  • High expectations
  • No expectations

Parental Roles

-For a child, i believe that the role of the parents would have to be to teach your child right from wrong, give them small responsibilities, teach them to always use their manners, teach them to be kind to others and to help them have high self esteem and to let them know they are loved.

-For a teenager, i believe the role the parents have to take on would be to REMIND them that they KNOW right from wrong, to take responsibility for their actions, to have open communication and let them know they can talk to you about anything, no matter how old they think they are parents need to check up on their teenagers, because they do like to bend the truth. A parents job is to raise their teenager into morally, responsible adults.

-For an adult, i believe that the role of the parent is to have given a good foundation for their adult child to be productive members of society. To know that good morals, respect, love, and kindness are the seeds for any of the 3 categories.
