Principal's Update
April 24, 2020 - Remote Learning Newsletter #6
Below are resources and information regarding NCCS Emergency Instructional Plan
Saints Community,
God is so good! We continue to work in collaboration with students and parents in our effort to provide remote learning for the remainder of this school year. Your partnership blesses our staff! Please continue to pray for us, as we are also praying for you. There is important information and wonderful items to share in this newsletter. Thank you for reading it through to the end, so you stay connected to the NCCS community.
Help keep kids and teens safe online-
As our students continue to use technology in remote learning lessons, it is important to as adults that we are providing superivision and safegards for online activity. We are aware that screen time and internet use are areas where children of all ages need to have clear direction from the adults in their life, at school and home. As your partner in education, we will support this effort by providing you and your child with resources for conversations and actions you can take at home. Please take a few minutes (okay maybe more as it is quite long, so break it down over several readings) to read this relevant article from Focus on the Family, that addresses screen time, internet, gaming, cell phones, filters, and more.
We want to share a few tips and resources for parents to help keep youth safe online:
Talk to your child about online safety. Even if you already have, a reminder won’t hurt.
Monitor what they do online and know their passwords. Maintain an open line of communication.
Consider having a family technology agreement posted in your home. Remind your child of the agreement they signed at school for technology use, it applies at home as well when using school equipment and online resources (ie Google Suite, SeeSaw, etc...). Digial citizenship is a life-long skill set and one that we all can work together to support.
Minimize the amount of publicly available personal information such as phone numbers, email addresses, where they live, birthdates and other identifying information. Help your kids understand what information is okay to share and what should never be shared.
Reach out to your internet provider and ask for the options they provide, or settings available that you can control for your home. Here is an example from xfinity https://www.xfinity.com/support/articles/set-online-parental-controls
Look into programs that support healthy online activity with filters. Some options below:
Blessings,
Mrs. James

"Senior Send Off" Celebrates our Graduates!
Our grads will be given a space in the parking lot to set up an area with their family, decorate that space as they like, and await a parade of cars with well-wishers to drive by in celebration of their graduation. We encourage you to make signs, cards, and find any other special ways to love on these great kids. This has been a very different end to their school years at NCCS, so we want to make it memorable and let them know how proud we are of them and love them.
Grad Spotlight: Alexis Donovan
Alexis has attended NCCS since Preschool. During her years at NCCS she has been a part of the following sports: basketball, soccer, track & field, and volleyball. She also was a part of the NCCS band, where she attended honors band and was also a part of the NCCS choir. She had the following positions on the Associated Student Body: Vice President 8th grade, Class Representative 9th and 10th, Vice President 11th grade, President 12th grade. She was also a member of the National Honor Society from 10th-12th grade. Since Alexis was in elementary her favorite subject to study was math. Alexis represented NCCS at the annual ACSI math olympics and speech meet.
Alexis has been involved within her community, she helped with Father’s Heart, Oregon City Chamber, Oregon City Business Alliance, and attended different functions at different assisted living centers. She also attended a national conference in D.C, where she met many national leaders, and attended a gala where the keynote speaker was Vice President Mike Pence. She is very involved in her church from teaching in Sunday School to helping with the behind the scene tech.
Alexis’ favorite verse is Matthew 6:34 “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” This is her favorite bible verse because it is a constant reminder to not worry about tomorrow and the next day, but know that God is in control of all our days.
Alexis has started working towards getting her Real Estate Agent License and is on track to get her license over the summer of 2020. In the fall, she will attend Grand Canyon University, where she has been accepted into the Honors College to pursue a Masters in Entrepreneurial Studies/Minor in Communications. While in college, Alexis will be working for a Real Estate Brokerage Firm in Arizona to gain experience. Alexis plans to study abroad through GCU’s Masters program.
Alexis’ favorite memory of NCCS would be those days after school when her friends and her would wait before a game and just sit in the field watching the sunset, laughing and kicking around a soccer ball, enjoying the simple moments of their lives. She also loved sporting events, sitting at the edge of the field surrounded by the student body laughing and cheering on the soccer team, or that feeling during volleyball games when you could hear the blue crew cheering after a made point.
Congratulations Alexis, job well done. You will be missed, but we are so excited about your future!
Grad Spotlight: Braden Hoeckelberg-Young
Braden also was the sound tech for the school play. He's been in National Honor Society since sophomore year. His favorite subjects to study are Physics and English.
His favorite verse is Joshua 1:9, "Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go." He said "I like this verse for the simple reason that it reminds me that God has my back and he’s got this big ole world under control. We might not know what he's doing, but that just gives us an even bigger reason to trust him."
After high school, Braden will attend Oregon State University to study mechanical engineering. He plans to go into a career based around vehicle performance and offroad capability. When asked about a special memory, he said "It’s hard to pin down a certain memory that is my favorite, but one that is definitely up there is when our class was at the beach for Communitas. We had a frisbee, and we were all just goofing around and having a good time with one another."
Congratulations Braden, we are proud of you! We are excited to see God's plan for you play out.
Remote Learning and Final Grading
Recently, there is a great deal in the news about Governor Brown and ODE positions and decisions to not provide grades (just a pass or incomplete grade) or feedback on a report card, to students for the period of time during school closures. At NCCS, our Remote Learning plan provides for a better educational process and decision regarding grading.
At North Clackamas Christian School, our 7th-12th grade students will receive grades (and GPA) for the classes they are enrolled in. As we believe the level of work that is being accomplished deserves a letter grade associated with it for this term. Our elementary students will have a narrative report card for the final trimester, stating the progress each student made. We understand that remote learning is different and this has been a difficult time for most. So we want to continue to be sensitive to needs of everyone, but keep standards in place for how we are doing school.
The work our students are doing is in line with completing their current grade level and coursework. We are confident the learning opportunities that NCCS students are receiving will position them to be ready for the next grade level. We take our commitment to our partnership with parents, in educating our students, seriously, and expect our students to be able to accomplish great things in the years to come because of the work we are all doing today, together!
