From Mr. Bachmeier's Desk
As we are winding down with February, I am very much looking forward to the home swing of our school year. With spring in the not so distant future, many exciting things will be taking place in our school district. The first thing that comes to mind is how close we are to having the junior high students move up to the new addition in Des Lacs. Currently, the building project is on time and within budget and our transition for the Junior High students will be in early April.
When we transition the Junior High students to Des Lacs, many changes will come, which we will implement in a phased approach. The transition will begin with students coming to Des Lacs for a half day of school. The next day, they will move their supplies and locker contents and stay at school for a “dry run” through the school day. The third day, students will experience a full school day and continue through the rest of the school year.
We will have four buses transporting the students in grades 7 through 12 at that time from Burlington, leaving the elementary school at approximately 8:05 AM. The school day begins with our first-period class starting at 8:30 AM and our final period ending at 3:20 PM. I am often asked why we are moving the students in the middle of the school year, and the reason for this is that the existing junior high wing will become the new kindergarten wing. This move will allow extra time for the construction and remodeling to be completed at Burlington and ensure school to start on time in the fall.
In March and spring, our students are in the mode of truly gearing up for our state-mandated tests that will be coming up in the next couple of weeks. Our students have flourished in the past with our state-mandated tests and I believe that this is because of the hard work that is put in by both our students and our staff to prepare the students for such tests. I must say, however, that these tests and their results are just a snapshot of one day. As an administrator, I ask that we keep this in mind when we look at the results in the summer. We must not be too quick to pose judgment on how successful our students are in the classroom from such a test.
Finally, when I look to the coming months, I see not only a change in our weather, but a change in our students and how much they have grown since entering our building in September. Students have grown not only by getting taller, but they have also grown smarter from all their hard work and dedication. This leads to this month’s educational quote by Abigail Adams, wife of our second president John Adams; “Learning is not attained by chance; it must be sought for with ardor and diligence.”
