Progress Reports
You will notice that all students have H.O.W. Score on their progress report. This score is assessing the "habits of the worker" and is broken down into four categories: Homework, Participation, Meeting Deadlines, and Meeting Quality Standards. Our "daily lessons", otherwise known as "formatives", are recorded in Web2School as "C" for complete, "NC" for not complete, and "PC" for partially complete. If you or your child needs their user name and password for Web2School, please ask Ms. Lynch.

Expeditionary Learning Background: Expeditionary Learning was born out of a collaboration between Outward Bound, USA and the Harvard Graduate School of Education. The Harvard Outward Bound project, established in 1987, sought to increase the profile of experiential education at Harvard’s school of education, while also bringing increased academic rigor to Outward Bound’s work in schools. The proposal to create EL was a marriage of the philosophies of Kurt Hahn, founder of Outward Bound, and the best of the Harvard Graduate School of Education’s theoretical and practical approach to teaching and learning.

We start at the beginning with ourselves, and with this learn about Expeditionary Learning Principle #1: “The Primacy of Self-Discovery”: Learning happens best with emotion, challenge, and the requisite support. People discover their abilities, values, passions, and responsibilities in situations that offer adventure and the unexpected. In Expeditionary Learning schools, students undertake tasks that require perseverance, fitness, craftsmanship, imagination, self-discipline, and significant achievement. A teacher’s primary task is to help students overcome their fears and discover they can do more than they think they can.

Educator's Corner
Mr. McDonald's Algebra II: One thing Algebra II has been working on is how to help a business maximize their profits by using survey information.
It all comes down to setting up a quadratic equation that models the business owner's information along with the survey findings and determining the maximum point on the parabola or manipulating the facts contained in the model quadratic equation.
Mr. Clark's Physical Science: In Physical Science we have been studying the Periodic Table and atoms- We have completed five summative assessments.
Ms. Otten's Algebra I: In Ms. Otten's Algebra 1 class we are working the learning target "solving multi-step equations and inequalities". Students have been using Empower to take their quizzes on line to see if they are ready for the proficient and/or advanced proficiency within this learning goal. Before diving into this learning target, time was spent on reviewing 8th grade material and also practicing Complex Reasoning Skills. Complex Reasoning skills include comparing and contrasting, classifying, deduction reasoning, problem solving, to name a few. Our next set of learning goals will be affiliating with solving and graphing linear equations and inequalities.
Ms. Otten is after school quite often whether she is covering homework club in the library from 2:30 - 3:30 or in her classroom.
Mr. Hess's Foundations of Literature: Mr. Hess's English class went on an adventure by reading The Hobbit. The class is now applying the literary and writing skills learned on this journey to craft their analysis essays.
Ms. Lynch's Global Citizenship: We are completing the lessons for our Introduction to Global Citizenship and beginning our first summative assessment titled "Think Global, Act Local". Please ask your child to take you on a tour of Empower where our materials are housed!
