REI Trail Run Club
Sunday July 24th
Trippet Ranch Topanga
BIG THANKS TO Sergei Dergunov who opened up his picnic table for us to join at his BBQ at our last Trail Run Club. Which started our now monthly cookouts. Next up Aug 28 we will be starting our run at Tapia Park and ending with another Potluck BBQ. YUM! Thank you again Sergei for sharing your delicious foods with us. (see picture)
Thank you for all who weathered the heat at Woodland Hills "village" run on Thursday!
You guys rock!
Sunday will be cooler in the morning but be prepared.
How to run in the heat.
* Listen to your body
* Slow your pace down (your body is already working over time)
* hydrate with water and take in some electrolytes (salty snack)
* If you stop sweating, your skin becomes patchy colors or you feel light headed... rest (preferably in the shade), hydrate and tell someone
Don't be complaisant, bring extra water for you and if a friend on the trail needs some.
On the trail it's more challenging and time consuming to get help. Be prepared.
Protect your skin from the sun
Be aware that snakes are more active during the heat.
Now.. let's have some FUN!

Road and Trail
Precautions and how to prevent
Twisting of the ankle: Keep your eyes on a 10 foot perimeter in front of you. Talk to friends with eyes on the trail, enjoy the vista views by stopping to acknowledging it's beauty, and stay on the most even part of trail.
Dehydration:
Sip on water constantly!
Cramping and light headedness are all signs of dehydration
Feeling light headed or lethargic:
Slow down, tell an instructor, add salt (electrolyte snack or drink)
Cramping:
Drink water and walk it out in the early stages before you are on the ground
Take an electrolyte snack or drink
Most importantly don't be shy about sharing your health issues with your instructors. That's why we are here. We are Wilderness First Aid certified and we are one family on the trail.
Wild life:
We are in the home of deer, coyotes, mountain lions, snakes, ants, bees...
Stay alert, tell others, stay in the center of the trail, listen and respect their space.
The night before and day of your run.
Get a good night sleep, eat a light and healthy before arriving and get excited about meeting some great, like minded people!
It's going to be awesome!
Let me know if you have any questions.
