February 2022
From the Principal, Dr. Tobon
Viking Families and Friends,
Well, Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow on February 2nd and made his prediction very well known considering we were not in school on February 2nd, 3rd, and 17th. I hope everyone was able to enjoy a good old fashioned snow day and at some point make snow people or help out neighbors in need. As a result of those snow days, today is an eLearning day. Our second day is scheduled to be made up in-person on April 11th and our third day is also scheduled to be made up in-person on May 16th.
Counselors are finishing up individual scheduling meetings with sophomores. They will begin meeting with our freshman beginning February 21st. If you haven’t already done so, please take a few moments to discuss your student’s course selections with them and review their diploma selection (Core 40, Core 40 with Academic Honors, or Core 40 with Technical Honors). VHS Summer School information will be sent via email to parents/guardians and students and posted to Canvas on February 22nd.
In October, I shared the names of the VHS National Merit Semi-Finalists. I am pleased to announce that Anthony Grisolano, Karli LoDuca, Eric Page, Isaac Utesch, and Carissa Yu are now National Merit Finalists. Congratulations to these students as well as their parents and guardians. I wish them the best of luck as they enter the final phase.
Lastly, Kiwanis International started a campaign called Delivering Hope and Health pledging $1,000,000 to Riley’s Children’s Hospital. The Indiana District Key Club has pledged $30,000 of the $1 million. Last Saturday, the VHS Key Club held Winter Formal in the cafeteria. The proceeds from Winter Formal are traditionally donated to Riley’s Children’s Hospital; however, the VHS Key Club hit a new record for ticket sales and as a result will be donating more than expected. The VHS Key Club will be donating a check for $2,055 to Riley’s Children’s Hospital.
Thank you for continuing to support our students, teachers, and staff.

Mocha Madness!
Valparaiso High School Drama Club will present the Mocha Madness improv show on February 24-26 at 7pm and February 27 at 2pm in the VHS auditorium. Students will create short scenes on the spot, as they play a variety of "Whose Line Is It Anyway" style games. Each of our 59 student improvisers will perform in two out of the four performances, so a new show is guaranteed every night! Come brighten your February with the best student improvisers in the region. Tickets are $10 and available at the door.

Rob Cespedes
I have taught at VHS for 19 years. I teach Spanish III and Spanish IV AP/IB. I coach Valparaiso High School Girls Soccer. I like many aspects of VHS. I like that there are school activities from early morning to late in the evening almost every day of the week. I like the energy and creativity of the students and talking with and collaborating with the great staff at VHS. An interesting fact about me is that I lived and taught in Perú, South America for 2 and 1/2 years.
