Principal's Message

Hello Webster Families,

Welcome to this beautiful rainy Monday!

We have many events and details to be shared with you.

We continue to work with our students to strengthen their social skills and emotional well-being. Our teachers are implementing a program call Second Steps which offers daily lessons.

Additionally, we, as an entire staff, are participating in an Anti-racism series "Moving from a Colorblind to a Color-Conscious School Culture" led by Powerful Choices Educational Consulting. We will be participating in Day 2 this afternoon.

I've heard very positive feedback from teachers regarding parent/teacher conferences. I believe that most parents have been able to participate in a conference. If you have not yet, please reach out to your child's teacher to set up a virtual conference time.

Join our Webster October PTA Meeting on October 19th at 6:30 pm.

Don't cook in on Wednesday! Join us for dine-in or take-out at Islands on Wednesday, October 20th from 4:00pm to close.

Wednesday, October 20th is also Unity Day! Students wear ORANGE to promote KINDNESS, ACCEPTANCE, and INCLUSION.

Webster staff and students will be participating in the California Great Shakeout on Thursday, 10/21 at 10:21am. This is an earthquake/emergency drill. I encourage you to talk to your child(ren) about this practice event to lessen any worry on their part.

We are resuming our Virtual School Tours. Our first tour for potential parents for the 2022-23 school year will be on Oct. 21st at 1:00pm.

Please note that our School Site Council Meeting is also on Oct. 21st at 6:00pm. The meeting is open to the public.

Our Fall Picture Days have been scheduled for Oct. 26th and 27th. This will be a free dress day for students. PreK, TK, Kinder and 1st graders will take their picture on Oct. 26th. 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th graders will take their picture on Oct. 27th.

The Great Shakeout

Learn about Drop, Cover, Hold On from MySafeLA.org

Why is it important to do a Drop, Cover, and Hold On drill? To react quickly you must practice often. You may only have seconds to protect yourself in an earthquake, before strong shaking knocks you down--or drops something on you. Practicing helps you be ready to respond.

  • If you are inside a building, move no more than a few steps, then Drop, Cover and Hold On:
    • DROP to the ground (before the earthquake drops you!),
    • Take COVER by getting under a sturdy desk or table, and
    • HOLD ON to it until the shaking stops.
Stay indoors till the shaking stops and you are sure it is safe to exit. In most buildings in California you are safer if you stay where you are until the shaking stops.

  • If you are outdoors when the shaking starts, you should find a clear spot away from buildings, trees, streetlights, and power lines, then Drop, Cover and Hold On. Stay there until the shaking stops.

  • If you are driving, pull over to a clear location, stop and stay there with your seatbelt fastened until the shaking stops. Once the shaking stops, proceed with caution and avoid bridges or ramps that might have been damaged.

Ground shaking during an earthquake is seldom the cause of injury. Most earthquake-related injuries and deaths are caused by collapsing walls and roofs, flying glass and falling objects. It is extremely important for a person to move as little as possible to reach the place of safety he or she has identified because most injuries occur when people try to move more than a short distance during the shaking.

Look around you now, before an earthquake. Identify safe places such as under a sturdy piece of furniture or against an interior wall in your home, office or school so that when the shaking starts you can respond quickly. An immediate response to move to the safe place can save lives. And that safe place should be within a few steps to avoid injury from flying debris.

Requesting Donations for Webster's Trunk or Treat on October 29th!

PTA is supplying some fun and some yummy treats for the Trunk or Treat event. We are gladly accepting additional donations to hand out to students participating in the event.

If you would like to donate, please send treats/candies/pencils/stickers etc. in sealed packaging to school. The sealed bags may be handed in to teachers or directly to the Webster main office.

Please send all donations in by Tuesday, Oct. 26th! Thank you for your support.

Tax Deductible Giving through Webster's Annual Fund

Daniel Webster Elementary School has been honored as a California Distinguished School. Great teachers, strong leadership, and parent involvement make Daniel Webster a great school to send our children.

In addition to the great education our students receive, they are also provided with various opportunities to participate in our music and arts activities. We're asking for your support to continue this legacy by donating to the Daniel Webster Annual Fund and help us reach our goal of $50,000.

These funds will be used to financially support our music and arts programs, and to support the instructional goals set forth by the School Site Council
We would like to see every family donate at least $1.00 per week ($50 for the school year) for each child they have enrolled at Daniel Webster.

Think of it as donating less than the cost of a weekly cup of coffee or soft drink to help ensure that your child receives a high quality education.

If you can donate more, we would encourage you to donate towards our Giving Tree. We have various levels of donations:
Bronze - $100
Silver - $200
Gold - $300
VIP - $500 or more

If you are not able to contribute financially please consider donating your time and talents.

To donate:

If you are making matching gifts through an employer, please let them know that they must provide PEF's information to their employer in order for us to confirm their gift.

Weekly COVID-19 Testing at the School Site

At its regular meeting on August 26, 2021, the Pasadena Unified School District (PUSD) Board of Education took decisive action to bolster safety measures that protect students and employees from COVID-19. The Board of Education voted unanimously to:

  • ratify an existing testing plan that places mobile testing teams at schools for students and employee testing and now requires

    • all students under age 12 to get weekly COVID-19 tests with informed consent from parents/guardians

Testing will be offered at Webster Elementary on Thursdays from 7:45am to 3:30pm.

PUSD offers COVID-19 PCR oral or nasal swab tests on campuses

Testing teams will be at each elementary and middle school site for one day to conduct the testing program. PUSD Health Programs will not test students who have not submitted informed consent.

How can parents give informed consent?

Parents can provide informed consent through two ways:

  • Register through the online platform: https://home.color.com/covid/sign-up/start?partner=cdph094

  • Complete the hard copy registration forms in English or Spanish which will be provided for you by the COVID-19 Response Team.

  • The COVID-19 Response Team will also bring posters of the QR code that connects directly to the testing link.

If you or your child are experiencing COVID-19 symptoms, do not come to school for testing. Stay home. You can come to the PUSD Primary Care Clinic at 351 S. Hudson Ave. Please call 626-396-3600 xt 88180 for an appointment.

Individuals who have tested positive for COVID-19 within the past 3 months, recovered, and are not showing any symptoms, are not recommended to test.

COVID-19 TESTING THROUGH THE PUSD PRIMARY CLINIC

  • Get Tested! We strongly encourage all students not yet eligible for vaccination to get tested. PUSD is providing incentives for students to get tested. These include gift cards, water bottles, stickers, and drawings for gift baskets for the family.

How and Where PUSD Students and Staff Can Get Tested

    See PUSD's Testing Implementation Plan

SELF-SCREEN BEFORE YOU LEAVE HOME

  • Stay home if you’re sick.

    • Before leaving home all students, employees, and parents must conduct a self-check. Ask yourself these questions:
      • Do I have a fever?
      • Do I have a cough?
      • Am I experiencing shortness of breath or difficulty breathing?
      • Am I experiencing any other symptoms?
      • Have I been in contact with someone who has tested positive for COVID-19 in the last 14 days?
      • In the last two weeks, have I been directed to quarantine, isolate or take a COVID-19 test?

    • If you respond "yes" to any of the questions, you must stay home and contact your school or office. It is recommended that you contact your primary care physician for further medical advice. If you have a fever with cough or shortness of breath, you are urged to contact your primary care physician as these symptoms may be attributed to COVID-19.

    • Upon arrival at school, school staff will perform a brief check-in to verify that students have completed a symptom screening.
