Boundaries Task Force Holds Second Meeting
On Nov. 28, the District 15 Boundaries Task Force met for its second meeting. The group, made up of 37 community members, is tasked with creating multiple options for potential new school boundaries for the Board of Education’s review. Task Force membership includes District 15 parents and residents without children in our schools. All members were selected by two community co-chairs.
The task force was formed for two reasons: To mitigate capacity concerns at several schools where enrollment is increasing and to address community issues with the current boundary lines.
Community Survey
At its Nov. 28 meeting, the group reviewed the Boundaries Task Force Community Priority Survey data. Data showed that the top priority for the community is neighborhood schools, followed by alignment of attendance from elementary through high school (students attending the same elementary school moving on to the same junior high and high school). The lowest priority of the community is diversifying schools, followed by efficient use of school buildings.
Initial Options
Task Force co-chair Sid Aman presented a set of initial boundary options for the group to discuss, based upon research he has done on the current boundaries, demographics information, building capacities and priority survey results. The options presented incorporate a range of ideas such as converting current elementary schools into middle/junior high buildings, creating a new school in Northeast Palatine and adding onto existing buildings. These options were created as a launching point for discussion and ideas.
Boundaries Software
Following the presentation of ideas and priorities survey review, the group learned more about the boundaries software recently purchased by the Board of Education. The software allows users to move boundary lines digitally to see what impact a change will have on every school in the district. The software will be made available to task force members during this project.
Subcommittees
To conclude the meeting, the group organized themselves into subcommittees. The subcommittees include: Community engagement, data analysis, educational impact, oversight and proposal.

one-five Foundation Funds Aerobic Drumming Activity
The District 15 one-five Foundation spends countless hours raising funds to enhance District 15 classrooms and learning experiences. Every year, the foundation offers teacher mini-grants to support innovative ideas that are not otherwise funded.
Physical education and music teachers at Frank C. Whiteley and Lincoln Schools received a grant to purchase materials needed for an aerobic drumming unit, combining rhythm and music with physical activity. The children are loving it! Watch the video below to see the students in action!
This activity would not be possible without support from the one-five Foundation. To learn more about the Foundation and how to donate, please visit one-five.org.
