Message from the Principal
Dear Ygnacio Valley High Students and Community,
It is with great sadness and disbelief that I inform you that Ygnacio Valley High's JV Basketball Coach, Reuben Lewis, passed away on Wednesday, February 24, 2021. As many of you know, Coach Lewis was always so spirited and full of life, and we saw how he brought his strength of character to all he did. Coach Lewis was preparing to start his second season as JV Basketball Coach. I know our entire Ygnacio Valley High School community will be heavily impacted by this loss, especially through this difficult time. He will be greatly missed.
The district has been made aware and they are assisting me in coordinating counseling and grief support for students and staff who are in need of support. To access YVHS Support Systems, please feel free to contact our Wellness Center at 925-684-8414 ext. 3610 or email me at hucakbye@mdusd.org.
If you would like to send condolences to the family, please send them to my email hucakbye@mdusd.org. As we get more information on services and other supports for the family, we will pass that information along to our community.
I ask that you keep Coach Lewis' family in your thoughts as they go through this difficult time.
With Love and Support,
Efa Huckaby

The Reopening Survey
District leaders sent a mandatory Reopening Survey (that is available through March 1) to all families, in which parents and guardians can express their intentions and any special circumstances. Upwards of 14,000 responses have been received so far. While not binding, the responses bring important information to school leaders about their community's needs.
For each student enrolled, families can choose one of two options for the remainder of the 2020-21 school year:
- Option #1: Student continues with distance learning in the morning and then comes to the school site for “in-person” support in the afternoon two days per week.
- Option #2: The student continues with 100% distance learning and will not receive on-campus support.
In response to community input, in both options, students will keep their currently assigned teachers in the morning time slots. It is possible that students may see a different teacher in the afternoon for support.
What if I did not receive a link to this survey?
- If you did not receive a unique and individualized “family-specific” registration survey on Saturday, you may click here to access the “general” registration survey. Parents may also access the survey at mdusd.org/2020-21, with an updated FAQ.
- *If you need assistance with accessing the general registration survey, please call your school site offices and our staff will collect the information and input it into the survey for you. Surveys are available in paper copies.
