1st Grade January 2024 Newsletter
Dr. Ronald E. McNair Elementary School
Happy New Year!
Please remember that it is important for our first graders to dress in layers during the cold, winter season. This way they are comfortable with temperature changes both inside and outside. Having your child's name written on each item ensures that any missing items can easily find their way back.
Our winter break will be from Monday, December 25th - Tuesday, January 2nd. School will resume on Wednesday, January 3rd.
We want to wish you and your loved ones the best and we look forward to seeing everyone in 2024!
Sincerely,
Dr. REMES 1st-Grade Team

OUR MONTH AHEAD
We will begin Unit 4 - Stories have a Narrator, in the new year. We will listen and retell key events in stories and also identify who is telling the story. We will continue to compare and contrast stories and characters.
In writing, we will focus on using adjectives(describing words) in our writing. We will write both narrative and opinion pieces. We will take a piece of writing through the writing process(pre-write, draft, edit and revise and then publish).
MATH
When we come back from our break, we will review module 2 before taking the End of Module Assessment. The following week, we will start module 3. This module begins with ordering and comparing lengths of objects.
SOCIAL STUDIES
We will be focusing on history where we will examine differences between past and present by comparing and contrasting. We will also begin to work on our culture projects and identifying and respecting traditions and customs of others.
AT HOME LEARNING
- Discuss with your first grader some things they want to accomplish (could be this year, this month, or any time length that you wish) and tie in with goal setting.
- Have your first grader write a letter to themselves to open in a year or before going into second grade. They can see how far their writing skills have come and read a note from their past selves!
- Head over to the library and search for a snowy day read aloud.
- If there's any snow on the ground, practice writing addition and subtraction facts.
GOAL SETTING
It is time to set GOALS for the new year!
Mrs. Blackwood
Ms. Collins
Mrs. Ledford
My goal for this year is to have more family time by traveling with our motorhome and to have new experiences. I would also like to take more fun workshops with my friends and explore our creative side. And last, to continue down a healthy trail with my family by cooking healthy meals and trying not to eat out as much. Trying thinking of some New Years resolutions that you and your family can make. I hope all of you have a great 2024!
Mrs. Lowe
My main goal for 2024 is to stress less and spend more time enjoying the little things. I have three young kids who keep me busy with alllllllllll the sports and activities, so I really want to slow down and enjoy all the time I get with them in the evenings and weekends.
Mrs. Smith
Mrs. Tsarev
My New Years resolution for 2024 is to spend more outside. This can be a challenge during the colder months, but I always feel better with some fresh air and exercise. Walking my dog and exploring new areas around Maryland with my family makes the time spent outside more rewarding. Here's hoping we get some good snow this year for sledding! Happy New Year, 1st grade families! 🙂
