A Thoughtful Classroom Update
Living and Learning in Third Grade
Nightly Homework
Just a reminder that each night students need to be making time for reading and math fact fluency! Reading can be enjoyed independently or as a partnership! Math fact fluency needs to be FAST and FURIOUS!!
Students also have log-ins for Typing Club. This can be practiced at night, as well! It is NOT a requirement, but a fun alternative to playing video games!! We do practice our typing skills 4 days a week during writer's workshop! This practice will help prepare students for the rigor of typing during the PARRC assessment that they take in the spring!
Reader's Workshop
We took time to dig deep this week and learn how to write an essay response for comparing two characters from two different stories, written by the same author! This is a huge undertaking, but a standard that all students are expected to achieve by the end of third grade! The rest of the week focused on learning to identify the tone of a story by using the illustrations and author's word choice to help. As well as learning to use text evidence to determine the moral/lesson of a story! Students are working hard during reader's workshop!! Wahoo!!
Math Workshop
Math workshop continues to push the students to persevere! Learning to write algebraic equations and learning three new ways to add two digit sums were our last two lessons of the first math unit! We finished up the week by taking the unit 1 summative! Results will come home next week after the students complete corrections and reflections!! This unit will serve as the report card grade for first quarter!
Writing Workshop
Students finished their personal narratives and worked on publishing their piece. A museum walk next week, will give everyone an opportunity to appreciate the writing work of their peers. The assessment for writing will be a 45 minute session where students will write their personal narratives from memory, keeping their third grade writing rubric in mind as they go! The results will be sent home and reflected on the report card for first quarter!
