April Newsletter
Spring is on its way!
What's Happening in Fourth?
M-Step: Our M-Step dates are the week of May 13th through 17th. Please make sure your child is getting lots of rest over that time period including the weekend before. Please talk with them about doing their best on the test. Let's rock it out and show everyone what you've learned!
Social Studies: Our Michigan Weekly's have changed gears and we are now talking about Michigan's Economics. This is new territory for most students talking about ideas like supply and demand, opportunity cost, and the circular flow model. We've been discussing how we have needs and wants, which affect the choices we make.
Michigan Model: The fourth grade classes are beginning a new unit in the Michigan Model, Safety. The goal of this section is to comprehend concepts related to hazards that threaten health and safety, including fires, home safety hazards, weapons, and Internet safety hazards.
Writing: Students have been working on a difficult writing, an expository letter. They had to come up with a main idea and supporting details for that topic from an expository text they have read in our reading series this year.
Math: The fourth grade is jumping around a few chapters in our math series in preparation for the M-Step test in May. We will be beginning chapter ten next week on two dimensional figures. Students learn how to draw and identify lines, line segments, and rays in this chapter as well as classifying and drawing angles such as right, straight, acute, and obtuse. They will learn about the properties of these lines and angles. Students will be discussing line symmetry and about patterns in sequences of shapes or groups of shapes. New vocabulary includes: acute angle, intersecting lines, rhombus, right angle, straight angle and trapezoid.
Science: We've begun our next Mystery Science Unit about the Human Brain: Body, Senses and the Brain. This introductory human body unit takes the perspective that we can think about our bodies as being like a machine. We have parts for moving around, sensors, and a built-in computer. Students will be exploring their senses and consider how the information we process helps us understand and react to our environment.

Students are excited for our Great Lakes Loons Baseball game field trip on Thursday, May 2nd. The bus will leave the school around 8:10 a.m. and return around 2:30. We will be leaving the game at 1:00 p.m. sharp. The game begins at 10:30, so we will be arriving early to explore the stadium. Students must stay with their chaperone throughout the day. All food, beverages, and souvenirs will cost extra, but are not required. Students may pack a sack lunch to eat on the bus, or may bring spending money for lunch, as the ball park runs food specials on the days that schools come to the game. Coolers are not allowed inside the park. As we will be sitting in the lawn seats, feel free to bring blankets and chairs to sit on as well.
