UOI 3 Newsletter 2: How the World Works
An inquiry into the natural world and its laws; the interaction between the natural world (physical and biological) and human societies; how humans use their understanding of scientific principles; the impact of scientific and technological advances on society and on the environment.
Central Idea: Scientists use research skills to study the atmosphere.

What have We Learned this Unit?
Math: In Math, students have learned about place value through addition and subtraction within 20. Find the links to the Parent Tip Sheets below. We have reviewed lessons 1-11 and moved on to the topic B of Module 2, lessons 12-21.
Students have completed a Topic A assessment and grades will be posted to ManageBac
Objectives:
- Solve word problems with subtraction of 9 from 10
- Model subtraction of 9 from teen numbers
- Relate counting on to making ten and taking from ten
- Model subtraction of 8 from teen numners
- Compare efficiency of counting on and taking from ten
- Subtract 7, 8, and 9 from teen numbers
- Share and critique peer solution strategies for "take from with result unknown" and "take apart with addend unknown" word problems from the teens
Reading: In Reading, students have read leveled books and worked on the following comprehension skills:
- Identifying events in the beginning, middle, and end
- Summarizing text
- Main idea and details
- Identifying characters and setting
- Identifying problem and solution

Science/Social Studies: During this UOI, students have explored different kinds of weather, the layers of the atmosphere, and the tools scientists use to conduct research. Students have used some of the same tools throughout various activities in the classroom.
AQI
During this UOI in AQI, students have learned:
Arabic
How to express the current weather. Students are able to orally identify if the weather is sunny, cloudy, rainy, hot, cold and warm. Students also learned new vocabulary words that would help assist their sentence building skills such as today, tomorrow, and yesterday.
Students have continued working on their reading skills by working in their reading groups. Students work on their reading either through reading from an appropriate reading leveled book or the Qaidah Nooraniyah.
Quran
Students have started the memorization of Surah Shams. Students are also learning the beautiful meaning of the Surah. Alhamdulillah, students have made great connections with the Surah tafseer and the daily weather.
Islamic Studies
Students have started learning about the Six Articles of Faith which are

Art
Mixed media- snowy day painting and collage
Students practiced painting techniques: how to hold the brush for small or big details, how to create wavy and diagonal lines.
They will create their final collage, the paper triangles will represent trees and then they will use white acrylic to paint snow using dot painting technique.
