New Tech News
August 2nd, 2020
Important Dates
- August 2nd: Reminder to fill out your residency verification by the end of the day today
- August 10th: Rookie and new NTH@C learner laptop distribution
- August 13th: Rookie Camp (most likely in the afternoon- specific details will be sent out at a later date)
- August 17th: First Day of School
Schedule "Pick Up", Residency Verification, Etc.
With the Dallas county judge's order that we are not allowed to gather in our schools face to face at this time, we will not be having our typical schedule pickup in person this year. We will be able to release your student's schedule (prior to the first day of instruction) so that you can see that in Home Access Center.
A requirement for ALL students enrolled is that each family provides verification of their address every school year. You may do this by uploading a gas, water or electric bill from June or July 2020- at this time, you must send it to Candace Haywood since the form is closed.
SchoolPay
Supply Fee: This fee would normally be $60 but we are NOT charging it this year as there are some expected changes. Our fee usually covers buses for schoolwide field trips, our new tech gives back t-shirt, and the communal use of supplies. Since we do not believe we will be taking field trips like we did in the past and since state guidelines recommend personal supplies, we will instead be giving out a school supply list.
Device Fee: You were prompted to do this during info snap or you can take care of it separately now through SchoolPay.
Art 1 or Art 2 Fee: $60 - this cost only applies to learners that are signed up for this class. The fee will go to the purchase of an art kit that you will be able to take home with you.
Graphic Design Fee: $10 - there are some supplies that learners will need to be able to have at home. This fee covers that and the link will be available in a future newsletter.
School Supply List
In lieu of the school supply fee, here are some things you might want to have handy this school year.
Package of graph paper
Notebook paper or spiral notebooks (based on your preference)
Pencils
Pens
Scotch tape
3x5 notecards
Highlighters
Ruler
Colored pencils (most important for 9th grade rookies)
Spirit Items
Virtual Rookie Camp
Rookie Book For Critical Literacies
Dear Parents/Guardians,
We are so excited to welcome your learners to New Tech High at Coppell this year. We are starting off our time together in Rookie year by reading Dear Martin by Nic Stone. It is a relevant and engaging book that will enable us to look at characterization, setting, and perspectives, as well as enable rich, meaningful discussions about the world around us.
Please know that we strive to select texts we believe the learners will connect with and enjoy. We choose all of our texts throughout the year because they represent various cultures and a wide variety of life experiences. Dear Martin is no different.
We have included the links below to purchase the book if learners would like their own copy. This may ease annotation and support comprehension. We have purchased some copies for learners to borrow if they need. Learners will not be able to mark/annotate the loaner copies.
If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out. We would be happy to give you more information.
We look forward to an engaging and fruitful year!

Rookie and New Learner Laptop Information
For incoming Rookies:
The laptops are 13 inch Macbook Air (2020 version model A2179). Learners can bring any hard case that they prefer. All learners will be expected to have their laptop cases in order to be able to check out a MacBook Air.
Learners coming from a CISD middle school will need to bring their iPads and chargers to us at that time so they can get their new laptops. Please remember to bring charger cords and blocks with you. If you are missing any items, you will be charged a fee.
An additional subject of note regarding the laptops, these new laptops will have the USB3 ports on them instead of the USB2 ports that most people are familiar with. If you have thumb drives or other items that are USB2, you may want to consider looking at some cheap USB2 to USB3 converters (you can also find these on Amazon or the like). Just a hint as we get ready for the start of the school year
For incoming Sophomores or Juniors: The laptops are the previous models of the 13 inch MacBook Airs (model A1932 or A1369). Since I do not know which model you will receive, you can wait to purchase your hard case after the fact.
Learners coming from CHS or CHS9 must also return their iPads with charger and block.

General College Planning Info
It is never too early (or too late) to begin thinking about and planning for life after High School.
To help with that planning, Texas Oncourse (https://texasoncourse.org/) has developed a website with many FREE resources to help you prepare.
Resources are broken down by goal (College search, College Application, Career, and more) and by Grade level (9th and 10th, 11th and 12th) so you can better find information suited to your needs.
I would encourage you to visit the link and begin looking through their information.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
Thank you,
Kennington
