Persistence
As mentioned in my previous newsletter, each month the school will focus on a Habit of Mind that we can integrate into conversations and lessons in our daily work. In December, our focus is on persisting. This habit has people sticking to a task until it is completed, not giving up easily. Humans who practice persistence, analyze a problem, develop a system, structure or strategy and attack a problem. They collect evidence to indicate that their problem-solving strategy is working and if it is not, they back up and try a new strategy for success. In school, persistence and problem solving are an intricate part of teaching our students to be independent.
Please help us by mentioning this word at home and pointing out times when your child is persisting.
Block Island School's Got Talent
School Improvement Team meets
A survey generated by SIT that was distributed in the community had a total of 38 people responding. When questioned, regarding the idea of a community recreation facility on Block Island, 90% responded favorably, 5% disagreed with the idea, and 5% had no particular opinion.
The group engaged in a lengthy and productive brainstorming session, and charted their observations accordingly. Categories included why a community recreation facility was needed; what it would look like; what are the best resources to do this work; and what are the obstacles?
In an effort to move forward, consensus was reached to:
Collect data about current programs/activities that are held in a variety of locations.
Research cost projections.
Link community groups (Recreation Board, Senior Advisory Board, Capital Assets Committee).
Contact Block Island Times.
Connect with Town Council.
Contact Building Official, Marc Tillson.
