What is vanilla?

vanilla is a solution mainly containing the flavor compound vanillin which is extracted from the vanilla bean.

How is vanilla made?

To make vanilla extract, the beans are first dried and fermented. Then they are split open and soaked with alcohol. Water is added to dilute the final product and to get the desired balance between alcohol and the vanilla. Some manufacturers also add sweetener.
