Words of Inspiration

“When one door of happiness closes, another opens, but often we look so
long at the closed door that we do not see the one that has been opened for us.”

-Helen Keller

A Special Applause to...

I know Jay mentioned it this morning at the Staff Breakfast, but I want to acknowledge the work of Nurse D, Bru, Jay, Tracey, Jennifer, and Tricia. While you may never hear the details of the situation, they handled it so incredibly well. Their work speaks to so much of what I see from this staff. Many times we do what we didn't intend to or think we would when we applied to work at this amazing district. When situations arise that go beyond those expectations, you exceed those expectations to meet the needs of our students and this community.

PD on the Fly...

In case you didn't know, each month at the Subject Leaders meetings we dig deep into the data. While the work you do goes beyond the numbers, they are an important part of the story here. We have a sheet (click here if you want to see it) organized in a way to track student progress over time. When looking at the Winter MAP data fro the building, we were so impressed by the work from your classroom. Every sub group grew in RIT score. Often we wonder, is what I'm doing working? After looking at the MAP data, it is!

We use so many teaching strategies and it makes it difficult to separate out what we are doing to make such a positive impact. While I know it isn't the only strategy, I feel your work around conferencing and goal setting with students is working! I am so impressed with the way you have used this strategy to leverage the relationships you work so hard to build with students.

With all of that said, the ability for this staff to iterate is what makes it elite. This month I want to share an article that was given to me by a staff member (Tim Klein).

The final paragraph of this article spoke to me. The work you are doing is teaching students more than you intend. "Our students are on the edge of possibilities, on the verge of pursuing and developing their potential to make positive and fulfilling contributions to this world. Our students may not be consciously aware of what they hope to achieve; they may experience only "glimmerings" of possibilities and nothing more. To help our students recognize and connect with their aspirations is one of the greatest gifts we can bestow on them, for students who know and can articulate themselves in this way are empowered for life."
