SHS Weekly Newsletter #5
9/23/22
Message from Mr. Mitchell
It has been so enjoyable to see everyone dressed up and excited about all of the Homecoming activities at the school this week! Some highlights have been the the high levels of participation for our dress up days, the positive energy and cheering for our Homecoming Court on Thursday night, and the energy in our Homecoming assembly Friday morning! As noted by our superintendent, Dr. Lyon, at the Friday assembly, "Our students work hard to know each other well and support each other so much. It's so fun to see every time I come to the building!"
One of our great avenues of support for our students and staff is our Parent Support Organization (PSO). The work hard throughout the year to assist our staff in the many events and activities that go on at Sherwood High School, and they could use your help! Please see their message below:
"The high school PSO is hoping to rebuild this year. This group focuses on supporting the school staff, student body, and leadership students. The Board is currently looking for volunteers for the President and Treasurer positions to partner with the current Board members. If you are interested in lending a hand, please email Chrissie at sherwoodhspac@gmail.com."
Have a great weekend and Go Bowmen!
Mr. Mitchell

Student Drop-Off/Pick Up
In order to help improve traffic flow before and after school please note the following guidelines and suggestions for the SHS Parking Lots:
There is no stopping or student drop-off or pick up on the driveway into the parking lot. All student drop-off and pickup needs to occur in the area in front of the school. Please pull all the way forward to the end of the lined drop-off zone
Once your student has exited your vehicle please safely make your way to the left lane and continue through to the exit. Allowing more vehicles to enter the drop-off zone
Vary drop-off times before school to avoid the congestion from 8:10-8:25
Vary pickup times afterschool to avoid the congestion from 3:20-3:35
Consider dropping off students in upper parking lot and enter the school through the commons
If possible, approach the school from the North on Elwert Rd. to avoid congestion at 99W and the roundabout
Standards-Based Grading Community Information Night
We will be piloting a Standards-Based Assessment and Grading system in several courses in both the middle and high schools this year. Standards-Based Grading (SBG) is designed to offer greater clarity for students and families regarding their grades, and to increase student involvement in the assessment process. We are hosting a community night at the District Office on September 27th to explain how this system works and how the information displayed in StudentVue and ParentVue can be used to identify how students are progressing with their learning and what areas they should work on next. You would know if your student is in a pilot classroom if it was noted in their course syllabus and were sent an email from your student’s teacher.
Last year, our High School piloted Standards-Based Grading in several courses with great success. The majority of students said that Standards-Based Grading helped them to focus on what they still needed to learn and gave them a clear picture of what they already learned and how to improve. We are excited to expand to a larger scale pilot this year, and to support students and families in using the new gradebook to guide their learning and reach their maximum potential.

Flex
Hello SHS families! As we begin another school year, we are excited for the return of Flex at Sherwood High School. Flex is a block of time in our schedule (during homeroom) dedicated for our students and staff to meet for:
Academic support from teachers.
Enrichment opportunities (guitar, chess, sports, etc.)
Homework help or test prep
Academic planning with counselors
Making up missing work, labs, and tests from absences
Club meetings
Extra practice for programs (band, choir, drama, etc.)
Guest speakers and career exploration
Flex will begin on Tuesday, September 13th. Students will begin signing up for Flex on Friday, September 9th in their homeroom using StudentVUE. At that point, and for the duration of the school year, students will go to Flex twice a week, on Tuesdays and Thursdays, in place of their regularly scheduled homeroom time. Every week, on Friday, there will be a new sign up for Flex for the following week. Students can sign up for and attend the same Flex for both days or choose two different Flex offerings for that week. Flex will show up as Period 8 on their schedule. Attendance is required and will be taken.
We are committed to providing exceptional supports and opportunities to our students. We are looking forward to offering Flex at SHS.
Athletic Ticketing
This year, Sherwood High School -- and other schools in our league -- are moving to online ticketing through Hometown Ticketing, Inc. Tickets can be purchased online through the High School website or the Hometown Ticketing App. It is highly preferred that tickets are pre-purchased online, and may also be purchased with card or cash at the entrance gates.
The cost to attend sporting events this year is $8 for adults and $5 for students. High school students who purchase an ASB sticker ($30.00) will be allowed in for free except for playoff games. Senior citizens, age 62 and older, will be allowed in for free except for playoff games. All students (regardless of the ASB sticker) and senior citizens will be charged for playoff games, and playoff game prices are determined by the OSAA and change depending on the level of playoff.
To purchase tickets online through our website, please visit the following link (print the QR code receipt and bring it to the entrance gate for scanning): https://shs.sherwood.k12.or.us/athletics-activities/ticket-sales/
For more information on the Hometown Fan app, please visit: https://www.hometownticketing.com/resources/hometown-fan-app/
For information on how to download the mobile app, please click HERE. When purchasing tickets through your mobile phone on the app, you will download your tickets to your device and bring the
QR code on the tickets for scanning at the entrance gate.
Additionally, PK-12 students may not bring outside drinks, backpacks, or skateboards/scooters into the stadium.
We look forward to our students, families, and community members joining us to cheer on our SHS teams!
School Meals: Free & Reduced and Expanded Income Eligibility Programs
We recognize the impact that returning to paid school meals this year can have on family budgets, and encourage parents/guardians to complete an eligibility application to determine if your family qualifies for free or reduced meals -- even if your family may not have been eligible under federal guidelines in past years. The Oregon Expanded Income Eligibility Group (EIG) supports families who do not qualify for meal benefits using federal income guidelines. It provides meal benefits to households with incomes above 185%, but not exceeding 300%, of the federal poverty guidelines.
To apply for either Federal or EIG free/reduced meal eligibility, please complete the Online Free and Reduced Meal Application. For more details on income-based eligibility, please click the image below to access the Federal and Oregon Expanded Income Eligibility charts for the 2022-23 school year.
Career Center

SSD Parents - We want your feedback!
The Sherwood School District is conducting a community engagement process as we assess how to best meet the needs of our students and families. As part of this process, we are currently providing parents/guardians with the opportunity to complete a needs assessment survey, to provide important feedback to our district.
Information about this process was recently shared at Back to School Night events and the elementary and middle school levels; the information from those presentations can be found here.
To complete our parent/guardian survey, please visit bit.ly/3DmQiCh or scan the QR code to the right to access our online survey. To complete the survey in Spanish, please visit bit.ly/3Su2OUC.
Sherwood Youth Soccer Club needs your help!
SYSC relies on volunteers to paint playing field lines each week during their fall season. If your student is looking for community service hours and has free time Thursday or Friday afternoons through October, this is a great opportunity.
Each field takes 30-45 minutes. Initial field layout, easy to use painting equipment, and striping paint are supplied by SYSC, we just need volunteers willing to trace the existing lines .
If you are interested, please contact fields@sherwoodsoccer.org or have your student talk to Mr. Farrand in M147.
PSO
The PSO is in need of new board members for several positions to keep this very valuable organization running. Please reach out to sherwoodhspac@gmail.com for more information about how you can be involved.
Join the over 1,100 parents who follow our "Sherwood High School - Parent Support Organization" Facebook page to keep current on announcements and volunteer opportunities. The SHS Parent Support Organization (PSO) exists to promote meaningful and active parent involvement in programs and activities that support student success while in attendance and post-graduation.
