MVP Updates
he Shawnee Mission School District (SMSD) strongly encourages volunteer support for students and schools. It is equally committed to the safety of students and volunteers. To support the goal of safety, the district has instituted a policy requiring background records checks for all volunteers.
In order to make the process more efficient and effective, on September 24, 2018, the Shawnee Mission Board of Education (BOE) approved the use of Validity Screening Solutions to provide background screenings for MVP volunteers. This new background screening process will take the place of the current fingerprinting requirement for MVP volunteers. Instead of coming to the Center for Academic Achievement, MVP volunteers will go on-line to and enter the required information.
There are now two steps required to complete the MVP process:
1) Attend an in-person training
a. Visit https://www.smsd.org/families/volunteer-mvp for available sessions.
b. Note: Tuesday morning sessions at CAA require a reservation—seating is limited. Email volunteer@smsd.orgfor more information.
2) Visit Validity Screening to complete the online, background screening process.
a. If you have already completed the required training, visitthis link to complete the process.
In most cases, applicants will be approved and ready to serve as a MVP volunteer within 48 hours.
SMSD apologizes for the inconvenience the fingerprinting process and long wait times have created. We believe Validity will provide greater convenience in less time, while still maintaining the safety our stakeholders, students and staff members expect and deserve. Your commitment to your student’s education and to the district as a whole is greatly appreciated. Thank you.
Dismissal Reminders & Pets at RM
While we all love pets, we unfortunately have to ask that you not bring them to Ray Marsh without permission from administration. The risk of an accident happening is extremely high during dismissal when we release all students who go in many different directions. While we love animals, so do our children, and they often stop and forget about our routines and procedures which causes extra stress to everyone. We are asking you to leave the pets at home, or keep them in the car, when picking up students.
Parking Lot
Please utilize the parking spaces when picking up during dismissal. We have had several complaints of cars getting blocked in when drivers have chosen to park on the curbs. Please remember, the parking lot is used by families that will get out of their car and meet their child. Children should not walk out into the parking lot without an adult. If you are wanting to stay in your car, you should utilize the car loop and pull as far forward as the car in front of you allows.
