Classroom Wish Lists

As we begin the start of a new semester we do start running low on supplies that get used up during the year. If you ever want to check to see what your child's classroom may be in need of feel free to check out the wish lists on our 2nd grade website. We appreciate any donations of extra supplies throughout the year!

Science Vocabulary

Here are the definitions of words that we have been covering in science.

There is no specific vocabulary over the phases of the moon.

Math Corner

Have you been wondering what some of our math terms are!? We will put some helpful hints in the newsletter each week to help you out.

We will be introducing the students to the basic of multiplication. We will be using concrete, pictorial, and word models to demonstrate our knowledge. Students will not be expected to know their multiplication facts or be able to write a multiplication fact yet. We will focus on how to create a certain number of equal groups. Over the next few weeks they will see a variety of problems that will allow them to use these new strategies to solve.

Repeated Addition- There are 10 markers in a box. How many markers are in 4 boxes? 10+10+10+10=40

Multiplicative Comparison Model- Johnny has 4 basketballs. His brother has 4 times as many basketballs. How many basketballs does his brother have? (Students would draw a model to show four groups of four.)

Rate Model- The teachers walked 5 miles each day. How many miles did they walk in 3 days? (Students would draw a model to show 3 groups of five.)

Cartesian Product Model- Salsa has 6 main courses and 2 side dishes on their menu. How many combinations could a customer order? (Students would draw a model to represent 6 groups of 2.)

Area Model- The gift I was wrapping needed a certain amount of wrapping paper. It needed to be 4 feet long and 8 feet wide. What is the area of the wrapping paper? (Students would draw an area model using rows and columns to show how many feet of paper there would be in all.)

We hope that you find these resources useful as you use them at home.
