NAIDOC PRAYER - Heal Country

God of all wonder,

We pause in the busyness of our days to listen deeply to the wisdom of this land and those who belong to it. May our minds be open to dialogue,

May our hearts be open to transformation and

May our hands do the work of reconciliation.

We ask that the Spirit accompany us on our journey of healing on these lands, seas and waterways.

We also ask the Spirit of peace be with all those who are living a life of fear, dispossession and distress.

We make this prayer in the name of Jesus our brother and friend.

Amen.

PRINCIPAL'S NEWS

Dear Parents and Carers

God is the greatest trainer.

When you think you cannot give anymore, he will challenge you and ask you to give him six more. God will challenge you when he knows you have the capacity within you,

for God always believes in you.’

How relevant is this quote in our current lockdown situation. When we are presented with COVID-19 lockdowns and restrictions, I can become a little anxious about how things will go and what is coming at us next. I am sure I am not alone in my thinking.

What inspires me the most, are the people within our own school community and those in my family that show such courage and positivity in these times. I continue to be inspired personally by their way of still being grateful. We really do have special people living among us here at Mary’s Mount Primary School. I see signs every day of life giving energy that make us realise that there is much to be thankful for.

The one thing God will make sure happens, is that if we have not taken time out for ourselves to refuel, then he will wait for us to be ready for the next challenge. God knows our capacity. He understands us better than we understand ourselves. As a Catholic school community, we acknowledge that we are made in his likeness. When you think more deeply about this, you can see why we have unlimited potential.

This is why the quote above resonates with me. God knows our capacity. When you have given so much to your day, dinner is done and you go to sit down for half an hour to have a cuppa at 8.30 at night, and you hear your little ones call out, mum or dad, and yes, you are needing to give six more. Just be gentle on yourself. You have the capacity. I mean, God always believes in you, otherwise you would not be sent these little moments of extra effort and joy.

In the end, we are so blessed here at Mary's Mount Primary School. We have so many good people that will just continually give out goodness. It is what allows us to be who we are. Not saying everything is easy, but so much is done with gentleness. For this I know we are all grateful. We only need look at our kids each morning and realise it is all worth it. During these next couple of weeks of holidays, do look after yourself and your families. It has once again been a busy term with many things achieved by our students in their learning.

May we all find the time of rest that is needed for us to be our best self for others. Take care and we very much look forward to seeing you back in Term 3. Exciting times ahead!

P&F UPDATE

Did you know that our P&F Committee has provided over $13,000 in funding for various school programs, projects and initiatives just this Term? Those items include full funding of the 'Highway Heroes' program, purchasing a large new shadesail to cover the Oval Playground area, four new chess sets for the school's 'Chess Club', plants, materials and machine hire for the school Nature Playground, 'Bush Tucker' plants for our school garden, plants and materials for the school Harmony Garden, venue hire costs and in-kind support of the Cathedral Mass Morning Tea and we've also donated $2000 to the school to purchase new books for the school Library!

These initiatives couldn't have been supported without the great fundraising ability of our families and local community so a very big thank you to every family that has supported our P&F and school fundraisers and events this year - our Big Splash Welcome Party, Tuition Fee Raffle, Lapathon, Mothers Day Stall, Easter Raffle, Nature Playground Busy Bee, Welcome Morning Tea and Cathedral Mass Morning Tea. Your generosity and support is greatly appreciated by us all and demonstrates that when we all work together and put a little cash in, we can do great things for our school which benefits every student now, and many into the future!

We wish every family a very happy and safe school holidays and look forward to a wonderful Term 3.

Yours in education,

HIGHWAY HEROES

This term we have delved into our new Social and Emotional program, 'Highway Heroes' and 'Little Highway Heroes'. We have focussed on Module 2 'Connecting for Friendships" which teaches children how to make and keep friends along the Social Highway of life.

Not every child is a social butterfly and is able to make friends with ease and not every child knows how to grow their friendship base and then to sort out the to-be-expected friendship bumps along that journey.

Knowing how to make a friend and to join in is an essential skill for every child – one that they’re going to need throughout their primary school years and beyond.

Throughout the term, students have enjoyed learning about how to identify a bump or a hazard and specific tools they can use to assist them, like the Friendliness SPICE, the triples A's of Assert, Accept and Argue when dealing with normal and nasty refusals, as well as how to identify friendship flare ups on a scale consisting of a zero, spark, flame or fire. Students have learnt about super thinking and stinking thinking and the importance of straight talk for friendship flare ups by using an assert response. Many classes enjoyed creating and sharing role plays and our Year One class shared a fantastic assembly item with us earlier in the term about the Friendliness Spice.

The program has allowed multiple opportunities for students to actively practise skills that increase their friendliness, social acceptance, and ability to manage friendships that are sometimes difficult.

We created a wellness walkway outside the administration block, our 'MMPS Family Highway of Life' and every student in Pre-Primary to year 6 enjoyed drawing their face and adding their vehicle to the highway.

Stay tuned for more updates on Highway Heroes next term as we delve deeper into the module.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED TO HELP WITH CHAPEL FLOWER ROSTER

Hi Mary’s Mount families, I am currently recruiting volunteers to add to our dedicated chapel flower team at Mazenod College. If you have been considering taking up a volunteer job but don’t have too much time then this could be the position for you. I only need you once per term, for roughly 20 minutes to simply change over the chapel vases with fresh flowers from your garden.

If you would like to be added to the roster or require more information please give me a call, I’d love to hear from you 😊.

SEASONS FOR GROWTH PROGRAM

We are ready for our second round of Seasons for Growth to start early Term Three. This time we are looking for children in year 3-4.

"Seasons for Growth" focuses on learning to live with change and loss. The work is motivated by Mary MacKillop’s principle, “Never see a need without doing something about it.

Change and loss are issues that affect all of us at some stage in our lives. At Mary's Mount Primary School we recognise that when changes occur in families through death, separation, divorce and related circumstances, young people may benefit from learning how to manage these changes effectively. We are therefore offering a very successful education program called Seasons for Growth which will commence early 2021. This program is facilitated in small groups and is based on research which highlights the importance of social support and the need the practise new skills to cope effectively with change and loss. The programme focuses on issues such as self-esteem, managing feelings, problem-solving, decision-making, effective communication and support networks.

Some families will receive an invitation in the near future with more details about the Seasons for Growth programme. If you think your son or daughter would benefit from Seasons for Growth we would encourage you to talk to him/her about participating in the programme.

Mary's Mount Primary School is pleased to be able to offer this important programme and we are confident that it will be a valuable learning experience for those who request to be involved.

If you require further information please contact Miss DeMarte (Program Coordinator and Companion).
