As your child’s first and most important teacher, you can be a powerful force in your child’s efforts to become a skillful reader. Whether your child is already a proficient reader, or is a struggling or reluctant reader, your positive encouragement can help them make continuous strides toward success. Here are some suggestions on how you can support reading at home:
-Create a quiet, special place in your home for your child to read. Keep books
and reading materials readily available.
-Encourage your child to read for 15 minutes before going to sleep each night.
-Discuss the importance and approach of reading for different purposes: to entertain, to inform, to persuade, etc. Reading for different purposes helps to define the speed and depth of understanding to apply to that reading.
Mathematics
The West Broadway math department has been working hard to start off the year building relationships with students through interactive activities within the classroom. Students have been learning how to create SMART goals for their future and learning so that they can start to create a plan for their future. Students have also been reflecting about what personalized learning looks like and what it means to them as a learner.
Mrs. Pistocco had her fifth graders work on their creativity and collaboration skills by having a competition on who could build the longest paper chain! This allowed students to learn how to best communicate and come together with their fellow classmates!
Ms. Maiorano’s eighth graders had a mystery bag challenge where students were given the same materials to create a Pom-Pom launcher! This activity allowed students to brainstorm and create while working collaboratively with their fellow classmates!

Social Studies
This month students and teachers in our Social Studies classrooms have been getting to know each other and developing a feeling of community while participating in team-building activities.
Students pictured above in Ms. Deschamps 8th grade US History classroom were blindfolded and challenged to collaborate and make the shape of a square with a rope as a team.
Also, good job by our eighth graders who analyzed industrial artifacts in Mrs. Deschamp's classes.
Lastly, "shout-out" to Mr. Landy for supporting his fifth graders with opening their lockers!
English Language Learners
At the start of the 2018/2019 school year, the ELL department at WBMS was very excited to utilize various activities to build community, familiarize students with growth mindset and aid in setting SMART goals.
After watching “The Story of Panyee,” a video about boys from Thailand who used their limited resources to achieve their goals, Mrs. Cribb’s sixth grade ELL class made personal connections to inspirational quotes. They expressed their ideas through illustrations and design.
Following an introduction, Ms. Jarret’s fifth grade ELL students worked on creating their own SMART goals as a way to motivate and enhance their learning. Students then worked in pairs/small groups to share their goals with one another and help find ways to strengthen goals and make them even more specific and meaningful.
Mrs. O’Connor’s seventh grade ELLs brainstormed expectations for demonstrating respect in the WBMS community. Some include “Be kind to others,” “Work together,” and “Treat people how you want to be treated.”
Mr. Owens worked with his and Mrs. Pelit’s eighth grade ELL students on preparing SMART goals and action steps associated with the completion of middle school and the following chapter in their lives.
Special Education
Our Special Education Team is made up of great teachers and support professionals. We work together to support students in many different ways and develop programs/plans tailored to meet individual student needs, such as Individualized Education Programs (IEPs). An IEP is a written plan that describes a student’s special learning needs and special education services that will be provided in order to meet those needs. The Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA) defines special education as, “Specially designed instruction, at no cost to parents, to meet the unique needs of a child with a disability”. Below, you will find the different programs we currently have in our school, as well as the teachers and professionals, who provide support within and for those programs.

Operations & Logistics
Bus Strike
We anticipate that the Teamsters Union bus drivers will continue to strike on Monday, Oct. 1. We are asking all families of school bus riders, including those with special transportation needs, to arrange for alternative travel. If you have not already done so, you must provide your child's school with your updated contact information and the names of adults authorized for school pick-up.
________________________________________________________________
Morning Drop-Offs
Students should be dropped-off in the morning on Barton Street (back of school) near the crossing guard or on Bainbridge Avenue near the cafeteria. There is on-street parking on a “first-come - first serve” basis on Bainbridge Avenue (front of school). Please avoid blocking our neighbors’ driveways.
In-School Transitions
Lunches: Students' lunchtime begins at 11:05am and ends at 12:35pm. Each of our three lunches is thirty minutes long and students are expected to clean up after themselves to support our safe and healthy environment in the cafeteria.
Advisory: Students attend Advisor Mondays - Thursdays from 2:37pm - 2:45pm and on Fridays immediately after their 5th periods class for fifteen minutes.
Dismissal: Students begin dismissal promptly at 2:45pm. Unless they are attending an adult-supervised after school program, they are expected to exit the school and board busses, join family members/after school care provider pick-ups or begin walking.
Afternoon Pick-Ups
Please pick up students at 2:45pm on Barton Street (back of school). Kindly avoid Bainbridge Avenue (front of school) because of the large number of busses this year.
Students are actively walking through the parking lot during the times referenced above; for the safety of our students, vehicles must not pass through during drop-off and pick-up times.
