Sayre Community Newsletter
COVID School Closure Edition 5
May 1, 2020
Happy Spring Folks!
Looks like we're heading into some fair weather, something we all need to lighten our spirits! If we didn't cross paths at our amazing Sayre School parade, we hope you have gotten a chance to log on to one of our many live Morning announcements on Facebook, hosted by Ms. Menjivar or had the kids log on to the live teaching sessions on Dojo or Google Classroom.
Although schools will remain closed for the remainder of the school year, we expect every student to continue to engage in online learning as best they can. One thing is for sure, the Sayre Language Academy Community is making the most of this tricky and ever-evolving scenario. We will continue to do our best to stay connected and keep the Sayre spirit strong!
In Solidarity,
Ms. Ade and Ms.Donatelli

4th Quarter Grading Guidance
Dear Sayre Parents and Guardians,
Please join us in ensuring that all Sayre students engage in online learning this week and the weeks to come. As the district provides clarity around grades, it is important that we work together in support of our students. Beyond letter grades, a student's work with online assignments informs how they are making progress towards grade-level standards an will inform levels of support once school resume.
To that end, all online assignments are a requirement. Per the Illinois State Board (ISBE) and district guidelines, grades will be given in the 3rd and 4th quarters. While grades will not harm a student's score, students will receive feedback on their work and will inform how the teacher shapes their instruction.
Student Expectations (where applicable)
Engage in learning (either online or via paper copy) and complete eALL assignments provided by the teacher and communicate with teachers via the designated online learning platform (Google classroom in most cases)
Utilize their teachers' virtual office hours and /or live lessons as a way to communicate with teachers.
Each week, Sayre staff will be following up with families and students who show low levels (less than 3 ) of online learning participation. We want every student to succeed and to feel ready for school when we resume. We look forward to a strong parent-school partnership.

COUNSELOR'S CORNER
We are diligently working on securing refunds for the New York trip canceled in April. We will have updates and details of your refunds coming out soon. 8th-grade graduation fees are also being processed for refunds. Please stay tuned for more details in the coming weeks.
Ms. Ade, Ms. Donatelli, and teachers held a Google Meets with 8th-grade students on Friday. We got to connect with students to understand their current concerns in regard to their final months at Sayre. We assured them that the Class of 2020 will be recognized in a small way now with plans to commemorate their graduation when in-person meetings are permissible. We got some great ideas and suggestions from students about how to stay connected. Thank you!
