John

“My goal in life wasn't living...it was getting high. I was falling in a downward spiral towards a point of no return. Over the years, I turned to cocaine, marijuana. It just made things worse. I had everything, a good job, money, a loving family, yet I felt so empty inside. As if I had nothing. Over twenty years of using, I kept saying to myself, I’m going to stop permanently after using this last time. It never happened. There were even moments I had thought of giving up on life.” —John

Deon

"Just after I'd shoot up, I'd get an amazing rush. I'd be on top of the world. Once the high really set in, my mind would get slow and fuzzy. It'd feel like I was sinking into the floor. I'd forget if I was asleep or awake, and time just passed me by. I got hooked quick."

Annie

(Daytop client with mother and brother)

"I wanted to fit in

The choice I made was to be with the negative crowd because that’s the one that is always talked about and is always in the center of everything. One night I was asked to go with them and they were all drinking. I wanted to fit in, of course I had to show off, I had to be the one drinking more than everybody else. And then the police came there. They were called I guess by someone who saw what we were doing and then they started to search us and I was the only one who had drugs on them. I had 300 Vicodans, which was a felony. I was put on probation and they said I could get put into a group home, or I could join a rehabilitation program. So I didn’t know what Daytop was really, I know it was a rehabilitation center and I agreed to it"

Conclution

In conclusion, people do drugs for many reasons...even when they know the harms of them. Peer pressure is the biggest one because if you have friends that are doing them, and they say that they wont like you if you don't try...most kids will do them. Kids don't realize how bad they are for you and how addicted you can become. Their words are "only once." But really they will probably be doing them for a while until they can get real help. A lot of people will also drink and do drugs to feel good. All the reasons they have for doing drugs are not reasonable and will get them hooked with out them even knowing.
