July 2021 Newsletter

Ka nui te mihi ki a koutou,

Message from The Principal

As we head into Puanga or Matariki - The Māori New Year celebrations, we would like to thank the whanau who responded to our mid-year survey. It is timely that we reflect and review what we do.

We are currently working on key themes that came out of this feedback, and the actions that we will be taking as a flow-on, to ensure we meet the needs of our learning community. We will update our community around this early next term.

It is great to see the wide range of wonderful learning opportunities in this months newsletter and the events that our young people have led and taken part in. A special acknowledgement for the ongoing support from a range of people and agencies towards the ongoing progress and achievement of our students.

It was especially great to see so many Year 8 students visit our school as part of the Taster Day, and we look forward to hosting all prospective students and whanau at our Open Night on Thursday 29th July.

Spotswood College staff were impressed with the way the visiting students engaged and interacted during the day being great ambassadors for their schools.

As we continue with our celebrations of Puanga, all the best wishes to our Kapa Haka team and Manu Korero Speech Competitors who will be taking part in the Regional Manu kōrero and Pae Rangatahi Kapa Haka competition representing our kura for the first time in over 14 years at this regional event.

Careers Week

Friday 25th June saw a fantastic WITT Secondary Schools Open day where 40 Spotswood College senior students were given a guided tour of the campus and also the opportunity to attend mini-workshops for the day.

Lots of fun, hands-on and practical activities saw a high engagement level.

We had spot prize winners and also Mia Cruse and Riley Peters won an Engineering challenge when they had to build a structure that needed to hold a weight and withstand strong winds.

A great day out and an awesome way for these students to finish the Spotswood College Careers Week.

The MITO Big Bus Tour took place. Spotswood had 5 Gateway students get a first-hand look at the variety of opportunities available in the automotive sector.

From NP Panel and Paint to the diverse roles at both Max Pennington’s and McCurdy Trucks the tour highlighted the many various training and employment options available in our community.

Year 12 Gateway students Journey, Jesse, Kane, Izak and Justin @ McCurdy Trucks with a brand new $350k truck that was being diagnostically tested before hitting the roads.

Our agriculture courses have been super busy despite the chilly temperatures with a wide range of work experience and taking part in the Waikato Field Day.

Gateway at Spotswood College offers our students endless opportunities to connect, be inspired and strengthen their pathways.

A high percentage of all Gateway students continue to gain employment/apprenticeships or continue on to tertiary study, either at WITT, or further afield. In 2021 we had over 75 senior students participate in Gateway and 25% of them were rewarded with part-time, full time or apprenticeship work offers. Many others moved to tertiary study or returned to school to continue their Gateway journey.

If you are currently a Year 11 or Year 12 student who is thinking of doing Gateway in 2022 please note that set criteria that will be considered before you are placed.

  • Complete a Gateway profile/application sheet in Term 3
  • Hand completed profile into the Vocational Pathways office
  • Hold a suitable level of attendance for your time at Spotswood College
  • Have an acceptable standard of pastoral history
  • Be proactive in helping find a suitable Gateway work placement

Formal Year 11 and Year 12 meetings for Gateway 2022 will be held throughout term 3, and applicants will be contacted directly by the Vocational Pathways team.

Gateway continues to be a very successful part of our senior curriculum, however, please be aware that these funded places are limited.

If you have any queries or questions about Gateway please contact the Vocational Pathways Office on 06 7514 690.

Community Connections are alive and well with recent visits to local business offices from our Culinary Arts Hub.

Our year 11 Lunchbox class has recently been working through a series of assessments for their Baking and Hot Finger Food units. Their 'customers' have been local companies who have a connection with Spotswood, this has seen them receive morning tea parcels delivered from teacher Jeff Thomas and Technology Administrator Angela Mason from the Technology Department.

The parcels were made up of sponges, banana cakes, scones, spring rolls, sausage rolls, and chicken satays.

The companies visited were Countdown Spotswood, Spudz, Peppers Construction, TimberCo, and NZ Red Cross.

Kaumatua Luncheon

Our staff and students were delighted to host our annual kaumatua luncheon. The kaumatua shared stories, waiata and were treated to a delicious 3-course meal! A wonderful intergenerational, learning experience!

In the first week of the July school holidays, Zara Erol-Watt has been selected to attend her second NZU17 Football camp to be held in Auckland. This follows on from her selection in the first camp back in the April school holidays.

Once camp is finished she will then head to Wellington for the 2021 NAGT Futsal Championships where she has been selected in the Central Football u16 girls team. Karawhiua Zara, give it heaps and we wish you all the best!.

Although we don’t have a specific school football team, we have many tauira out playing football on the weekends for their respective clubs; with of course ‘Mr Moturoa’ Scotty Manson leading the charge in the local men’s premiership competition for Moturoa AFC. Our very own Oliver Hill currently sits second by 1 goal in the Men's Premiership Golden Boot award with 18 goals, massive achievement Oli!

We also have Manuel Luque from Central Football coming in at Active Movement time to take some of our junior footballers through some development. We look forward to seeing the impact this has in helping build our future footballers at Spotswood College.

An interrupted June with the Queen's birthday weekend and then some rain-affected washouts; our netballers have been building as the season has gone on and look to be hitting form as they get more familiar with their teams.

We also have some students involved in club netball - Mishka Rosa is playing for ‘The Locals’ netball club in premier women's netball, Emmett Ferreira-Lima and Imogen Eru-Solomon are playing for Tysons; while our very own Ann Rogers is in charge of the Tukapa Premier team.

Year 9- student Harmony Awa-Paora has representative honours making the Taranaki Under 14 Development team.

A building year for Spotswood College rugby after a 2-year hiatus but signs that the future looks bright with 3 teams this year, 1 U16 girls team and 2 U15 boys teams. A notable achievement of late is our Under 65kg team and their victory against NPBHS on the world-famous Gully ground.... surely an experience those boys will never forget.

Representative nominations for various age-grade teams have been made, so keep an eye out for some of our ākonga being rewarded for their performances so far this season.

The usual brains trust of Mr Abrams and Mr Moratti, with the help of Mr Savage, has seen our basketball programme build this year. Our players look fit and look to be really benefiting from having Te Hiringa (school gym) as a facility. Watch this space as the potential for the teams to keep growing and developing is certainly there.

We had 10 students attend the IPC Volleyball regionals for various Taranaki age-grade teams, over Queen’s Birthday. Mr Joe coached a team as did Mr Gayton. The students who attended were - Isabel Lindsay, Isis Kennard, Nikki Tamati, Ellie Dinnis, Jessica Proctor, Shavannah Jordan, Esther Cocker; Rylee Houghton, Jayden Leece and Shaeden Wetere.

Volleyball club on a Wednesday is thriving with up to 60 students of all year levels there to work on their volleyball craft. Thanks go to Ms Laurence and Mr Joe for providing a great opportunity for these young people!

Congratulations to Josh Houghton who ranked NZ #2 in the adult AA expert class in E1 enduro.

Outstanding achievement!
