First Grade 2015-2016

Note From the Teacher

This was another great and productive week in 1st grade! This week, in Reading, we worked on finding the main topic and supporting details. In Writing, we worked on Opinion Writing. In Math, we began counting by patterns. In Science, we have been working on Matter. We even participated in a hands on lesson and made ICE CREAM! The students had SO much fun! Be sure to check out the pictures at the bottom of our newsletter. :-)

Price PTO will be providing donuts & coffee to the Top Rocker Parents prior to the February 1st assembly. This months Rock the ROAR assembly will be Monday, February 1st starting at 8:45am in the Price gym...as usual. Top Rocker parents are invited to show up at 8:15 am in the gym to enjoy some sweet treats before the assembly begins.

Thanks in advance to the PTO for providing this opportunity to connect with other Price parents while we wait to celebrate the great things happening at our building! IF you have any questions about the Price PTO feel free to contact them at:
price@republicpto.org

Also, January 25-February 3 each building has been challenged by People Helping People of Republic to host a "Souper Bowl" aka a soup drive contest between classes! The class that brings in the highest number of packaged soups in each building will be awarded with Super Bowl-type snacks on Friday, February 5. Lets help a GREAT cause AND earn our class some Super Bowl snacks!!! Our grade level goal is to bring in a total of 100 cans!!!

On February 12th we will be having a small celebration in our classroom to celebrate Valentine’s Day. This is not an official party sponsored by PTO. During this time we will exchange Valentines in our class. We have 18 students in our class. Please have your child address a Valentine to each of them and bring them to class on Thursday, February 11th. I ask that they bring them in the day before so I can help those who forgot to have valentines for friends too. Your child may bring in a decorated box or bag to collect their valentines in that day. Your child may also bring a sweet treat to share with the class if he or she would like to. If you would like to provide a drink or big snack let me know. Remember it must be store bought and individually wrapped. Parents are welcome to the party. It will be held from 1:50pm to 2:30pm. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.

If you are interested in being a guest reader, please let me know! We would LOVE to have you! :-)

Ice Cream Recipe

I had many students ask about the Ice Cream recipe, so I wanted to share! :-)

Ice Cream in a Bag

Ingredients:

1 tablespoon sugar

½ cup milk, cream, or half & half (we used milk)

¼ teaspoon vanilla extract

6 tablespoons of salt

Ice to fill a gallon size baggie halfway ( I recommend using freezer bags)

1 pint/quart sized baggie

Place sugar, milk, vanilla in the pint/quart sized baggie. Place salt and ice in the gallon sized baggie. Put the pint/quart baggie into the gallon baggie. Hold one hand on top of the bag and one hand on the bottom. Shake many times. When the milk mixture does not look like milk it has formed into ice cream. Take out of ice bag. Empty small baggie in a cup or bowl and enjoy. :-)
