A NOTE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Parents and Guardians:
Time certainly does go by quickly. Here we are in the second semester already. Be on the lookout for information for our upcoming Sweetheart Dance on February 24th. This is also a favorite activity for our staff and students. Additionally, you will see more fundraising activities for our Relay for Life Team.
You will also see information coming home about Cyber Days, should we miss more than three days of school this year due to inclement weather. Looking outside now and having enjoyed the last few weeks of mild weather, I would guess we will not have bad weather this winter. But, you never know. Your children have practiced signing into e-CLASS and the letter will give you more detailed information of what to do in the event of school being closed due to weather conditions.
There are two student holidays on 2/10 and 2/20. STRIVE students only will have early release on February 22nd and 23rd. You will receive more information closer to the date.
As always, I am in awe of everything our students accomplish during their school day and the dedication and expertise of our amazing staff. I was just at a local job site and was taken on a tour and introduced to all of the staff by one of our students. I watched students in cafeterias helping fix food, I saw packages being created, mail being sorted, and budgets being worked on. It is a proud time to work for ADAPT-STRIVE.
With warm regards,
Dr. Barbara A. Martin
TOP NOTCH POD
It has been a great start to 2017 for the Top Notch Pod! We have many exciting things to share as the new year begins. Top Notch students began the new year attending their newly assigned job sites and learning a variety of different skills. Since August our students have attended several different jobsites for vocational skills training which include: Chesney Elementary, B.B. Harris Elementary, Kroger, K&G, Buford Elite, Annandale Village, Plantation South, and Muze Salon. Our students continue to work hard and gain the vocational skills needed to obtain a job of their own. We cannot wait to see more progress in our students as they continue to make us proud each and every day!
Top Notch students have also been learning new skills during Community-Based Instruction that have allowed them to become more independent such as shopping, purchasing items, budgeting money, locating groceries, navigating stores, and ordering food at restaurants. Many of the students’ favorite day is Wednesday, because who doesn’t enjoy eating out with friends? Our pod members sure do! While the students are enjoying a lunch out with friends, they are also learning skills that are allowing them to become more independent in the community. The community sites that the members of our pod enjoy going include: Mall of Georgia, Sugarloaf Mills, Walmart, Bogan Park, and Stars and Strikes Bowling. We recently had a pod cookout at Bogan Park in which our students enjoyed the great weather while playing games, fishing, and eating yummy hamburgers and hotdogs. A few of our classes have had the opportunity to go swimming at Bogan Parks' indoor aquatic center. Some students showed their adventurous side by braving the waterslide! With all of that being said, that is why we always look forward to Wednesday Community Skills!
The Top Notch Pod has been very busy with extra-curricular activities. In January, we attended Special Olympics Bowling. Not only are they outstanding athletes, but they always work as a team and show great sportsmanship. We look forward to participating in other Special Olympics events throughout the year. Our pod members enjoy being a part of Aktion Club which meets every second and fourth Friday of the month. Our students have been great contributors to Aktion Club’s service projects: Relay for Life, Great Days of Service, and United Way.
Thank you for allowing us to share our awesome Top Notch students. It is a pleasure to watch them grow and mature into young adults!
