Principal Message

Dear St. Mary School Families,

I am very excited to start this school year and meet everyone! Although this year may not look like a school year we are used to, we will continue to strive to deliver an exceptional, Catholic education to our students. This year will also be a great exercise in a growth mindset. Growth mindset is a term coined by Dr. Carol Dweck which describes a mindset that everyone has the ability to grow in intelligence and that effort is an important factor in that mindset. This year will present challenges and difficulties, but the ability to grow and learn will still be the goal each day. My daily goal, as principal at St. Mary School, is to strive to give our students the best day ever, every day!

Also, just a reminder to have Final Forms completed before the first day of school. Emergency contact forms and Covid-19 Acknowledgement of Risk need to be completed before the first day of school. If your student will require transportation from Vermilion Local Schools, please complete the Transportation Survey below as this is very important for VLS.

Thank you,

George Mitchell

Covid-19 Acknowledgement of Risk

Every family is required to complete this form. Each student in a family is also required to sign this form and return it to school. You may scan and send back in email or drop it off in the office. This needs to be completed prior to the first day of school. If you have questions or need a copy of the form, please email George Mitchell at gmitchell@stmaryvermilion.org.

Temperature and Symptoms Checks Reminder

Stated in the reopening plan were the policies regarding temperature and symptoms checks for students prior to coming to school. We are working to implement a system for parents to track those checks in order to provide the school with timely information in the event symptoms are present. Ultimately I implore you as parents to perform that temperature and symptoms checks EVERY morning in order to ensure our students, staff, and families remain safe. If the temperature is 100.0F or higher and/or Covid-19 symptoms are present (symptoms list in the plan) the student, as well as siblings, needs to remain home. Please ensure consistency with following this policy!

Final Forms

If you have not registered with Final Forms, please use the attached directions below to complete that registration process.

Preschool Update

First day 4's - Tuesday, Sept. 15th

First day 3's - Tuesday, Sept. 15th

AM Preschool start time will be 8:15 instead of 8:30. This is an effort to ensure we have ample time between preschool groups to sanitize the classroom.

AM Schedule - 8:15-11:15

PM Schedule - 12:30-3:30

Face Coverings - Preschool students will be required to have a face covering (mask) at school. However, they are not mandated or required to wear them throughout the day. Our preschool staff will work with our students to understand the purpose and procedure of wearing face coverings and will have the discretion to allow preschool students to not wear face coverings throughout the day. It will be highly encouraged that they wear them while moving through common areas of the school, but with the understanding of student-by-student needs with the face coverings for our preschool students. If there are any questions regarding face coverings please reach out to Mr. Mitchell at gmitchell@stmaryvermilion.org.

Important! - Transportation Survey

If you have not previously completed the transportation survey, please complete it.

In order to tailor daily school procedures in the midst of this pandemic, it is important for us as a school to know the transportation methods of our students to ensure safe arrival and dismissal procedures can be followed. This information will also help us to work with Vermilion Local Schools to find transportation solutions during the time that VLSD is fully virtual and St. Mary School is continuing in-person instruction. Please take a moment to fill out this survey. Thank you!

Lunch Update

Lunch was a frequent topic of questions with the reopening plan and I consulted with the Erie County Board of Health regarding the necessity of brown bag lunches. I was assured that brown bag lunches are NOT required and students may bring their own lunch boxes/bags from home that will be reused. We ask that students only pack lunch items they can open on their own without assistance and no microwaveable foods.

First Day of School

The first day of school has been pushed back to Tuesday, September 8th. The first day of preschool will be the following week on the 14th. Preschool 4's will begin on the 14th and Preschool 3's will begin on the 15th.

Online Learning Option

Our online students will work asynchronously from students in-school. Students will receive daily instructions and materials from their teacher through Google Classroom. Students will still be enrolled in their traditional homeroom class, but will also have availability to work with St. Mary School teachers throughout the week via video sessions. There will be a minimum of 30 minutes of face-to-face small group instruction daily with three days a week exceeding 30 minutes. There will be an emphasis on math and reading/English-language arts instruction during these sessions, but may be modified to address student needs. An Online Learning addendum is being completed for the reopening plan that will be released on Monday. This addendum will include a more detailed schedule and expectations for our Online students.

Masks and Hygiene

The Ohio Department of Health issued a mask mandate for all students K-12 for the 2020-2021 school year. St. Mary School will require masks in accordance with the state mandate as well as for the preschool (please reference preschool update in this newsletter for further guidance). Parents, please begin to work with your children on wearing masks properly and becoming comfortable wearing them.

Update: students may wear the gaiter scarf type face coverings, although the cloth masks are recommended.

Also, please practice proper hygiene as well. Please visit https://www.cdc.gov/handwashing/index.html for guidelines.

If there are any questions regarding face coverings, please contact Mr. Mitchell at gmitchell@stmaryvermilion.org
