Canada needed a railway witch would go from one side of the country to another. Andrew Onderdonk, a New York engineer was given the contract to build a bit of the railway near Revelstoke, British Columbia. In that area there were not that many workers due to danger. Between 1881& 1884 about 17 000 Chinese men came to B.C. to work as labourers on the Canadian Pacific railway. The Chinese labourers got payed $1.00 a day, with that they would buy their food and camping and cooking supplies. The wight men got more money though. From $1.50 to $2.50 a day. The Chinese didn't only get less money but they also got given the more dangerous work. There were accidents and fires. Land slides and dynamite killed many people. There was no proper medical care and many Chinese depended on herbal care. The Chinese railway workers lived in tents they did there cooking over open fires outside there tents they ate rice and dried salmon and a cup of tea. With there salaries they could not afford fresh fruit and vegetables, so many of them suffered from a bad disease called scurvy. so living conditions were bad. In the winter the only way to keep warm would be by open fire. Sometimes they would have to pack all there belongings and move to the next camp, normally walking about 40 kilometres to the next place.
