Superintendent's Message

Hello SOMSD Family,

It’s hard to believe that we are one-month into our virtual learning. Throughout the process we have been learning and tweaking where necessary, to ensure that we are providing our students with the best educational experience possible. In the midst of this unprecedented time, I am happy to see opportunities for our students to enjoy a sense of normalcy and want to acknowledge some scholastically talented CHS seniors.

On October 5th, I had the opportunity to attend an outdoor, socially-distanced, recognition gathering for 20 Columbia High School seniors from the Class of 2021 who were recognized as Commended Students for the National Merit Scholarship Program; and 3 seniors who were named National Merit Scholarship Program Semifinalists.

Our 20 CHS commended students (among the our BOE student rep. Lily Forman) placed among the top 50,000 scorers of more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2021 competition by taking the 2019 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT); while our 3 CHS Semifinalist are among approximately 16,000 Semifinalists in the 66th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. These academically talented students have the opportunity to continue in the competition for National Merit Scholarships

CHS administrators, Principal Frank Sanchez, along with Director of Counseling, Falynne Bassalone and her office coordinated the event to congratulate our seniors on their accomplishments. Maplewood Mayor, Frank McGhee also joined the celebration. Help me in congratulating all of the CHS students listed below:

SOMSD Celebrates National Hispanic Heritage Month

The South Orange & Maplewood School District celebrates the positive impact that Hispanic Americans have left on our country. We especially want to recognize and celebrate all of our staff, students, and community members of Hispanic/Latin ancestry. Each year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15, by celebrating the histories, cultures, and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America," according to the official government website. It takes place from September 15-October 15 every year. Read more.

2020 SOMSD Virtual Week of Respect

This week schools throughout SOMSD Celebrated "Week of Respect" from October 5-9. In 2011, NJ signed into law the NJ Anti-Bullying Bill of Rights Act, a policy created by the NJ Legislature that combats bullying in public schools across the state. The Week of Respect, which grew out of the Act, is held annually to raise awareness, educate, and advocate against harassment, intimidation and bullying. Although being done virtually this year, all schools within our District have created unique and age-appropriate ways to assist students in understanding harassment, intimidation, and bullying.
