Campus-Wide Collaboration to Support Hurricane and Earthquake Relief Efforts
We will continue to update this email with relevant information regarding on-campus efforts and ways for you to get involved.
Below you will find events in the local area, links to organizations to donate to, and on-campus efforts for supporting individuals affected by these disasters.
The Best of Intentions: A Framework for Response
The Corporation of National and Community Service advises our nation on which actions and responses are most effective in the event of a natural disaster. Their website provides us with the following guidance:
Do not self-deploy as a volunteer to a disaster area. We know you want to help, but food, water, shelter, and transportation are at a premium and the first priority is making sure that first responders and local residents get what they need.
Sign-up before you show up. If you are trained to volunteer, make sure to find an organization and sign up. Capacity is stretched during disasters and you need to make sure that you can be utilized.
Donate cash. If you have connections with reputable organizations, only then donated material goods. Cash is often preferred by affected communities so they can buy what they need and not have to worry about sorting and storing donations, especially when storage facilities may be damaged or being used to shelter people.
PLEASE NOTE: Until Nazareth learns more about the infrastructure on the ground to support untrained volunteers, we will wait to organize any service trips supporting rebuilding efforts.
