MACBETH ACT 1 SCENE 1
1971 Roman Polanski VS 2006 Geoffry Wright
Similarites between the films and text.
In both films and the text there is 3 witches who are together and are talking about meeting once again. In Polanski's film the witches are ugly which is more true to the text compared to Wright's. In Wright's version the witches looked similar which is how they are described in the text apposed to Polanski's in which they were different in age and looks. Although each film is not true to text 100% Polanski's version is closest to the text compared to Wright's. However I enjoyed Wright's film better because it was more legible both in audio and visual.
The witches looks
In the text the witches are described as 3 ugly women. In Polanski's version the witches range from an average looking young women to an old, almost deformed looking woman. In Wright's version the witches are all young attractive women (see picture).
The witches actions
In the text the witches start off the book by adding ingredients to make a spell. In Polanski's version the witches add ingredients to a hole in a beach while reciting a spell (see picture). In Wright's version however the witches are running around in a graveyard vandalizing gravestones.
The legth of the whole scene
In the text, the first scene with the witches spans 13 lines of dialogue. Polanski removed some of the lines in favor of showing more actions. In Wright's the scene is more focused on the mischief the witches are causing rather than what they are saying however, he they did say all of the lines in the text.
