Second Grade News
Week of January 27th-January 30th
What We Learned This Week:
Reading and Writing:
Our selection this week was: Dear Juno. We will continue with this story into next week, and have our Test on Wednesday, Feb. 5th.
We also read Groundhog's Runaway Shadow this week. Prior to the story we discussed Groundhog's Day, so your child may be interested to watch the live events on TV Sunday morning! Along with this selection, we did a couple of different writing activities. One was detailing the problem and solution in the story, and the other was an activity on inferring why Phil wanted his shadow to go away.
Next, the class read a nonfiction selection on groundhogs. After, with partners they completed a true and false activity, where they had to site evidence from the text to prove their answers.
In class we worked on mini book reports. This was a pop-up activity, that went over really well! The kids were excited to present their reports to one another. This will be an activity we will do more of in the future.
Language Arts: We continued with our practice on irregular verbs: past, present and future tense.
Math:
Science:
One activity we did this week was to create an action plan for a town that was about to be impacted with a mudslide! The children looked at picture of the town, and had to pinpoint which are of the town would most likely be affected. After they came up with their action plans, their next task was to write a letter to the mayor of this fictional town. The letters were very creative- and the children's ingenuity and engineering skills shone through.
We are planning a trip having to do with this Science Unit, to visit Imagination Station located in Wilson. More info to come next week!!
