May 3rd Grade News
Library Media
Third grade classes will be finishing their research unit over the coming weeks with Mrs. Flannery. Students worked through the planning, gathering, and reviewing of information on their class topic. Topics ranged from: how snow is made to tornadoes! Classes are currently having fun putting all of the facts they learned into a video. We are using an app called, TC Studio and playing with the green screen effect. All classes will be finished with this project by the end of May, just in time to explore some Makerspace tools and plan for summer reading!
Summer reading information will be coming home in June but all families should have received a flyer about the book swap. Students are asked to bring in 2-5 gentle used books. At the book swap, our hope is to send all students home with 2 books. Please bring your book donations into the library by the end of May. Thank you!
With Mrs. Hill, students have participated in the following read alouds:
Ranger in Time by Kate Messner (Nutmeg Nominee)
Harriet the Invisible by Ursula Vernon (Nutmeg Nominee)
Punk Farm on Tour by Jarrett J. Krosoczka (visiting author)
Morris the Millionaire Mouse by Melanie Martin
If you have any questions in regards to your child’s library experience. Please don’t hesitate to contact us or locate more information on the library webpage.

Music
This month in third grade music, we shifted our focus away from recorders. Many students have already met or exceeded the goal of earning their “green belts” before the end of the school year. Those that haven’t will still have opportunities to test before the end of the school year.
Aside from recorders, this month third graders practiced reading notes and learned a folk song and dance called “Alabama Gal”. There were lots of laughs as students worked as a team to learn the traditional dance forms! Students also learned about the four families of the orchestra: woodwinds, strings, brass, and percussion. They watched a video created by the US Army Field band, in which musicians share their favorite features of their instruments. You may want to watch this video again at home as you talk about instrument choices. You can find the link on my music room website here.
On Monday, May 15th, third graders will participate in the annual “Instrument Petting Zoo”! At this exciting event, students will be able to hold and play all of the instruments they can choose from in fourth grade. They will also get to meet the other music teachers in the district! It is very important that you attend parent night at Center School on Thursday, May 18th if your child wants to play a band instrument next year. Your child should have brought home a letter about this from Mrs. Sprague. If you don’t remember seeing it, you can access a copy here. All questions about the fourth grade band program can be directed to Mrs. Sprague at lsprague@easthamptonct.org.

Art
For the past month, Miss Pinto’s students have continued to work hard on earning their stamps in their passports for CHOICE art. Our goal is to achieve 6 stamps by the end of the school year, and we are all almost at that point. We have spent the past few art classes brainstorming strategies to ensure that they reach their goals and most of the students feel confident that they will get there. There are only 5 more art classes for our little artists for this school year. Students have grown to become independent artists, problem solvers, and teachers. It is amazing to see the progress as they effortlessly begin and end a work of art, just to jump back into another one, all while choosing their own media and learning from each other along the way. We can’t wait to have our passports and the final few works of art completed to bring home and share with you!

Physical Education
Hi everyone! Things are going great in PE class, the children are working very hard, showing much improvement, and having a lot of fun! We spent March playing cooperative games, using the scooters and playing scooter soccer, and, as always, working on our fitness, flexibility, balance, coordination, strength, and power. We also finished up our Badminton and Shuffleboard units.
In mid April we will set up for our longest unit of the school year, gymnastics, a favorite of all the children! We are fortunate to have actual gymnastic equipment and we spend about 5 weeks on this unit.
Just around the corner, we will be sending home volunteer forms for our end of the year finale, Fun Days! Fun Day for Gr. 3 will be June 8th, with the makeup date June 9th, if necessary. Fun Day takes place for the whole day, with many fun activities and stations to visit and enjoy. We have always been very, very fortunate to have a great parent and family turnout to help with making Fun Days the great day and success it has been for decades now. Keep your eyes open for these forms, coming home early May, we hope you are able to lend a helping hand, it is a lot of fun and the children love to see their parents and people they know spending the day having fun with them!
We hope you all enjoyed your April vacation, hopefully everybody was able to spend some time outside having fun and getting in a workout in as well.
Baseball, Softball, Soccer and Lacrosse seasons are here (just to name a few!) and the children are always anxious to share stories about their games and matches with us!
Take care,
Coach Boscarino and Coach Ruel
