St. Columba's Primary School
NEWSLETTER | TERM 2 | WEEK 8 | 16 JUNE 2022
From the Principal
Dear Parents and Carers,
Please keep in mind the Year 4 students who are making their First Holy Communion this Sunday. They will be holding their retreat in preparation for the Sacrament tomorrow.
Please be aware that St Columba's is required to provide information to the government each year through the Nationally Consistent Collection Data (NCCD) information regarding students with disabilities. Students who are on a medical action plan may also be included in this information.
Personal information is not provided to the NCCD.
On Wednesday and Thursday of Week 10 our Yr 3-6 students will be participating in First Aid training with the St John of God Ambulance officers. This is a great opportunity for our students and I would very much like to thank Mrs Van Oosbree for organising these two training days.
Congratulations to all of the students for their participation in the school Cross country on Tuesday. The effort and participation by the students was great to see. Many thanks to Mr Chatt for the organisation of the cross country and the very smooth and seamless running of the event.
A number of families are dropping students off at school before 8:15am in the morning. A reminder that students should not be on the school grounds prior to 8:30am. Your help in this matter would be much appreciated.
A timely reminder that students are not to play on playground equipment before school, due to duty of care issues. The equipment is not supervised during this time and if there is an accident, St Columba’s is not held responsible.
Our school term is almost over. In Week 10 families will have access to reports and information has been sent home on how to access them.
A reminder that students finish this term on Friday July 1 and resume school in Term 3 on Tuesday July 19.
God Bless and keep safe.

First Holy Communion Mass
This Sunday 19 June will see our Year 4 candidates receive Jesus for the first time in Holy Communion. They have been looking forward to this celebration for weeks, having learnt the content, rehearsed for the Sacrament, and will participate in a Retreat Day together tomorrow.
We thank their parents, teachers, and the school worshipping community for all their help and support in the preparation phase and wish candidates all the best as they take their next step on their faith journey.
On Tuesday, 14 June students in Years 3-6 attended the St Columba’s Cross Country Carnival.
The students represented their faction over various race distances for their year level and all students showed wonderful sportsmanship cheering their faction and competitors on.
At the end of the carnival it was Casey who proved themselves worthy to win the Carnival. A big thank you to Mrs Ogg, Mr Beins and Mrs Neuman-Veitch that helped train students for the carnival in previous weeks.
A special thank you to all parent helpers and supporters who attended the event.
Plant a Tree Day
This year the school is getting involved in ‘Plant a Tree Day’ on Wednesday 22 June, to promote sustainability and be responsible stewards of our natural environment. All classes will participate in activities centred around caring for nature.
Our Year 6 and Kindy classes will buddy up and be involved in tree planting activities on the bottom oval, organised and supported by the P & F. We thank Mr Chatt for liaising with the P & F team to make this event happen.
St John's First Aid Courses for Year 3-6 Classes
We are excited to be able to provide our middle and upper primary students with the opportunity to participate in a St John’s First Aid Incursion in Week 10.
These will take place across Wednesday 29 and Thursday 30 June.
First Aid skills are useful for everyone, and we look forward to building these with our students.
HELP - Performing Arts Festival Costumes
Do you have a student at St Columba's? Can you sew? Can you spare some time?
All students from Years 1-6 have begun preparation for this Year's Performing Arts Festival. I am looking for some parent help to do some machine sewing for some simple costumes.
If you can help, please email Mrs. McDonald

Mental Health Check in
In this day and age our lives can be very hectic and busy and it’s important that we take the time to check in with ourselves- How are you feeling?
If you think you might be suffering from a mental health condition or are just in need for general support, please reach out to your Doctor. A Doctor will ask some questions about your general wellbeing and is able to write up a Mental Health Care Plan which offers 20 subsided sessions (an additional 10 due to COVID), with a Psychologist or Counsellor per year, or may refer you to a Psychiatrist if they feel an official diagnosis/medication is needed.
Psychiatrists, Psychologists and Counsellors have similar roles and it can be confusing to understand the difference between each role because their roles do overlap with each other.
A Psychiatrist is a specialist in mental health conditions and is able to diagnose conditions and prescribe medication. Doctors can also prescribe medication depending on the medication.
Psychologists are trained to do some diagnosis assessments however, cannot prescribe medication. Psychologists specialise in therapy intervention for mental health conditions and are trained with using various methodologies for support for their clients such as CBT therapy (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) and ACT therapy (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy) to name a few. There are a range of different methodologies that a Psychologist is trained to implement and some Psychologists may specialise in certain approaches. Counsellors have a very similar role to Psychologists however Counsellors offer talk-based styles of therapy, utilise active listening, and help support their client’s general wellbeing or bring about effective change/problem solving skills. If you are seeking support for a diagnosed mental health condition, generally a doctor will refer you to a Psychologist for ongoing sessions.
You are able to choose a Psychologist or Counsellor that you wish to see, or if you don’t have any one in mind, the Doctor is able to select someone for you based on your preferences of distance, finances, and specific issues you would like support with. The Centre for Clinical Interventions offers a free counselling service in Northbridge, with trained Counsellors and Psychologists, however the waitlist can be long. The website offers great resources on a range of mental health education including anxiety, depression, self-care, sleep etc.

Dads of St Columba's
Thank you to everyone who came along or zoomed in to the P&F meeting on Tuesday night. It was a massive agenda with a lot of great discussion. There are two fantastic outcomes from the meeting I would like to share with you all this week.
I am pleased to share that the P&F will be funding two terrific incursions and presentations for our children and parents throughout the second half of this year. The first will address cyber security covering topics such as cyber bullying, your online footprint, online gaming, digital citizenship, netiquette and so much more. The second will address topics and emotions our older children are currently having to deal with. These include friendships and frenemies, friendship changes, mindset and personal growth, stress management and so much more. More information will come out soon.
2. TERM 3 CO-CURRICULAR - Basketball
A number of families in the school community have requested an after school sport option for the children held at St Columbas. The P&F are excited to share that we will be funding after school basketball in Term 3 for years PP-6. Expressions of interest will be sent out soon.
Have a lovely rest of your week.
