FEATURED CAREER OF THE WEEK: Physician Assistant
Even before the current Coronavirus outbreak hit, many parts of the country were facing a shortage of medical workers.
California, for instance, will have a shortage of 4,100 primary care providers by 2030, according to a 2019 report from the California Future Health Workforce Commission.
Physician assistants, who have advanced training but not a medical degree, are among the top professionals needed to fill gaps when there are not enough doctors.
Education Required: Master's Degree
UPDATE: We are now collecting community service hours from the 2019-2020 school year.

Personal Email vs. GUSD Student Email - Which one should I use?
Well, both.
Be sure to create a personal email address (Gmail, Yahoo, iCloud, etc.) for colleges, scholarships, community service, and more.
*Remember, when creating an email address, choose a username that is professional. I recommend simply using your name (examples: claireirvine OR claire_irvine)*
Use your GUSD student email address for school communication, Google Classroom, and classes. etc.
Did you know?
- Your GUSD student email does not send or receive emails outside the GUSD network.
- The student email is deleted once you graduate, so your personal email will be your working email.
- Adding your student email to your portal ensures that teachers and staff are able to contact you since all student systems are connected to Q.
Things to Consider Before Take a GCC Course
Should you take a college course next semester?
*We want you to be successful in your core 10th grade classes first! If you are struggling in your current classes or did not do well in your classes last year, it would be best to focus on the classes you have now to raise your GPA.
*Keep in mind that one semester of a college course is equivalent to an entire year of a high school course. They are intense and fast paced!
*The grades you earn in a GCC class will go on your college permanent record. If you earn a "C" or lower, it is really hard to bring up your GPA and it may affect your plans for college after high school.
*The college class may interfere with your classwork, extracurricular activities, and colleges often do not operate on the same academic calendar, so you may have conflicts with school commitments.
If you are interested in taking a GCC course next semester, email me and let's chat about it!
Let's Stay Connected!
Here are some ways for us to stay connected:
- π Google Classroom: I have invited each of you to my Google Classroom where I will post important updates and information. Please check the page often! If you don't see the invite, please email me and I will send you the code.
- βοΈπ» Don't see your answer on the FAQ page? Email me: cirvine@gusd.net OR click here to book a time to speak over the phone or via Google Meet
- Be sure to follow the Hoover Counseling Office on Instagram! @HooverHighCounseling
Should you take a college class in your 9th-grade year? Counselors do not recommend 9th graders to take a college class during their freshman year. Below are some reasons why waiting to take a college-level class next year might be a good idea:
*We want you to be successful in 9th grade first. Earn good grades and maintain a high GPA from the start
*The transition year from middle school to high school is not easy. Get used to the high school academic demands first.
*In 10th grade, you will have a full year under your belt with a high school transcript GPA and you will be able to make a better decision if you can handle a college class.
*The grades you earn in a college class will go on your college permanent record. If you earn a "C" or lower, it is really hard to bring up your GPA and it may affect your plans for college after high school.
*The college class may interfere with your classwork, extracurricular activities, and colleges often do not operate on the same academic calendar, so you may have conflicts with school commitments.
*Focus on joining a club, doing extra-curricular activities, building relationships, and connections with your peers, teachers, and staff, educate yourself on ways to do community service during these hard times, etc.
