Intercession: Trimester 2
Trimester 2 is quickly coming to a close. Over the last 10-12 weeks, students have been diving into texts and different artifacts, rooted in Human Rights. During the week of March 6-12, students will have the opportunity to take what they've learned to a new level, through a variety of experiences. Each grade level team will be reaching out with specifics (if they haven't already)!
See below for the Essential Question that each grade level has been tackling; after each day, make sure you're asking questions to help your students make connections from what they've learned at school to what they experienced in the field.
Kindergarten: What is freedom?
1st Grade: How did slavery strip humans of their rights? Who were the Human Rights Heroes of that time? How did they make an impact?
2nd Grade: What injustices did people face before the Civil Rights Act of 1964? How did Civil Rights Heroes respond to injustice? How can people respond to injustice?
6th Grade: How does living in a new country impact a human's rights?
Students have really been tackling some heavy topics! So, as usual, we will try to mix in a little fun during the week as well!
And, as always, we welcome families to join us on these experiences, as chaperones. This is a GREAT way for you to dive into the learning with your own child and his/her peers. Please reach out directly to the classroom teacher(s), if you're interested in attending the trip. FYI: the school will pay for your trip and you can ride the bus with the students, if you'd like; however, you will need to provide your own lunch!
ACS Calendar for 2020-2021
After talking to students and staff, we are considering a change for next year: although we will remain open from 6:30 am - 6:30 pm each day, we are considering ending the academic school day at 3 pm. We've learned that, by this time, our students are in need of opportunities that stretch their brains differently; so are considering utilizing 3-4 pm to enrich their learning, alongside academic-focused community partner. However, we don't want to make any changes without your voice. Therefore, we ask that you take a moment to complete this poll to share your thinking on the change for the day.

Coronavirus Update from Superintendent Munn
Dear Aurora Public Schools Community,
With the heightened national and international media attention on coronavirus, we wanted to provide you with helpful information. As you know, communication regarding health and safety issues are part of our APS CARES Framework. As such, we are writing to update you on the most current recommendations of local and state health officials regarding the novel (new) coronavirus (2019-nCoV). Please know that APS has been working closely with our local public health agencies including Tri-County Health Department as we monitor Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19).
What is APS doing and what should we all be doing?
The APS Health Services Department regularly monitors illness trends in Aurora and surrounding communities while working closely with the Tri-County Health Department on increased numbers of illness or specific illness cases.
However, as a precaution, school nurses continue to monitor illness trends in each building and encourage all students and staff to:
Wash hands frequently with soap and water or an alcohol-based sanitizer
Cover a cough or sneeze with the inside of the elbow or tissue, then wash your hands
Avoid touching eyes, noses and mouths
Stay home when sick (Please follow the Colorado Department of Public Health & Environment’s guidelines)
Avoid close contact with people who are sick
Disinfect high-touch surfaces
Please be assured that APS custodians, transportation and cafeteria staff have also been spending additional time cleaning and disinfecting high-touch surfaces.
In the potential case of a local outbreak, APS would follow the Tri-County Health Department’s lead on any specific quarantines, closures or other significant precautions.
What is coronavirus and what are the symptoms?
Coronavirus causes respiratory symptoms including fever, cough and shortness of breath. It is spread through coughing or sneezing, much like the seasonal flu. There is no current vaccine to prevent coronavirus.
If you have been to China or in close contact with someone with confirmed coronavirus (COVID-19) in the past two weeks and develop symptoms, call your doctor immediately and follow these CDC guidelines.
Please note that our community is seeing high numbers of seasonal Influenza A & B and we strongly encourage staff, parents and students to get a seasonal flu (influenza) vaccine to reduce severity and/or prevent the flu.
If you are looking for additional information, please review this CDC fact sheet. The safety of our students and staff is our top priority. Thank you for your continued support.
- Superintendent Rico Munn
Second Semester Testing
end of February - beginning of March: Gifted and Talented Testing
* ONLY 2nd grade students or nominated students from other grades will be screened for gifted and talented.
mid April - end of April: CMAS Testing
*ONLY students in 6th grade will take CMAS in both Reading and Math. This is a state mandated exam, which helps us better understand how students are progressing towards mastery of grade level standards.
Building Update
The projected move in date is the end of March. The building is currently being painted and they will work to put in the floors and the carpets in immediately after! We are currently working to set up our movers and furniture team to move all of our things (from the church and from storage).
We are working to finalize a date for a full tour in March for families AND an official "soft grand opening" for the community in April; stay tuned for additional information!
Go to https://smile.amazon.com/, login as you normally would, and type in our school name (Aurora Community School); we will show up as a Charter School in Denver Metro, CO.
