Reminder: Make sure students are looking at and thinking through their social studies/science notes each night! It is important that students are familiar with the content to help build information as the units progress.
What we are learning about this week...
Something new this year is that we will rotate our time between science and social studies. This means your child will be learning one or the other at one time, but never both. That being said, it is really important that your child is reading over their science and social studies notes each evening, as mentioned above.
Math: This week we are looking at dividing fractions. This week, the students will be able to:
- divide a whole number by a unit fraction
- divide a unit fraction by a whole number
- solve problems involving fraction division
- divide decimal dividends by non-unit decimal divisors
- interpret and evaluate expressions involving scaling and fraction division
Reading: We are continuing our fantasy unit. This week, the students will:
- reflect on learning
- think metaphorically about themes
- learn life-lessons from characters
- investigate internal and external quests
Writing: We are continuing out literary essay unit. This week, students will be able to:
- use stories as evidence that supports and connects to a thesis
- use quotations as evidence
- use lists as evidence
- determine what makes a good literary essay
- determine how to be a powerful essayist
Science: This week we will continue our landforms and oceans unit. This week students will be able to:
- explain how different landforms and surface features result from the location and movement of water on Earth's surface
- define what a watershed/drainage basin is
- describe landforms on continents
Social Studies: This week, we will start up with World War II. This week's emphasis will be on the Pacific theater, all the way up to the end of the war.
- Explain the principal events related to the involvement of the United States in World War II, including campaigns in North Africa and the Mediterranean; major battles of the European theater such as the Battle of Britain, the invasion of the Soviet Union, and the Normandy invasion; and events in the Pacific theater such as Pearl Harbor, the strategy of island-hopping, and the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
- Analyze the role of key figures during World War II, including Winston Churchill, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Joseph Stalin, Benito Mussolini, and Adolph Hitler.
- Summarize key developments in technology, aviation, weaponry, and communication and their effects on World War II and the United States economy.

Math Standards
We know that math is so different from how you learned it. We know this because we learned it the same way you did! When we learned it, we only learned the steps of 'how' to solve a problem, but the emphasis now is more toward students becoming problem solvers on their own and understanding the problems in a more conceptual way, rather than just solving them. Below is a link to our math standards, which are the pieces that, by law, we have to teach each year. What is really cool about these standards is they also show examples of the types of problems they may encounter within this standard.

Attendance Information
Attendance
Regular school attendance enables your child to benefit the most from the academic programs we have to offer in Anderson County District One. We place much emphasis on student attendance at Spearman.
A student has 5 days after an absence to bring in a note (medical, court, etc.).
Each school in Anderson County is required to hold a parent conference and write an attendance intervention plan when any student has three (3) consecutive or five (5) total unexcused absences. Ensuring your child's absences are infrequent and documented by written notes is the best way of avoiding this step.
