Indoor Recess - Bees

The letter below was sent out today to our families in first grade. I'd like to be sure that all are aware and to ensure you all that we are doing everything we can to handle the problem as quickly as possible. Please see below -

Today during recess, six first grade students reported bee stings on our playground. These children were taken to the school nurse to receive treatment. Thankfully, none of the students were seriously injured. Following our school district procedures, parents of the affected children were quickly notified. We want you to be aware as your student may talk about the insects when they get home.

Pest control experts have made several visits to UNES, including this week. As you may have noticed at your home, this is a time of the year when bees, wasps and hornets can be more aggressive.

We are taking necessary precautions to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future. Our District Facilities Department is working with the pest management company to walk every area of our campus and, out of abundance of caution, please be advised we will have indoor recess until we can be sure that the playground is safe.

Thank you,

Principal Craig Dreves

We ask that students DO NOT BRING TOYS TO SCHOOL, unless there is a special show and tell or other event planned and your teacher specifically asks for items to come to school. Thank you for your cooperation!

NO FOOD CELEBRATIONS PLEASE

As we have a number of students with food allergies and are guided by our district wellness policy, we ask that parents do not send food items in for birthday or holiday celebrations.

If you would like to celebrate your child's birthday at school, please speak to the teacher first. Some ways to celebrate your child's birthday (with teacher consultation) could include:

  • Coming in to school to be a surprise MYSTERY READER .
  • Sending in a craft or other non-food item for kids to enjoy.
  • Sending in non-food goodie bags.

Cupcakes, cookies, donuts and other items could contain allergens and our staff cannot allow them to be distributed to the kids.

MORNING BREAKFAST PROGRAM

Morning Breakfast Program

  • The district offers a morning breakfast program at the elementary level for kids starting at 8:00am. It is important that parents do not drop child(ren) off prior to 8:00 am as there will be no adult supervision prior to 8:00 am (no exceptions).

  • Our morning breakfast program is for any and all students. There is no cost for this program except the cost of breakfast, but we ask that you register if you think you will take advantage of this service (even if you don’t intend to use it every day) because we need to have adequate supervision.

  • Normal drop off time remains 8:30-8:45am, unless parents are registered for the morning program.

DISMISSAL

Please refer to the attached map (CLICK HERE FOR MAP) for a visual explanation. Take special note of the following:

  • To help make the dismissal process more efficient, on the first day of school, we sent home 2 bright yellow STUDENT PICK UP cards that are specific to your child. Please place these on the dashboard of your car, or carry them with you if you are a walker, and this will assist us in releasing your child more quickly. Also, if someone other than the parent is picking up, these cards will expedite that process, but you will still need to call the school to notify us. If they get lost, please call us for new ones. Please bring these cards for at least the first two weeks while the staff gets to know everyone, and then save them in a safe place for the rest of the year.

  • Kindergarten students ONLY are released promptly at 3:00pm from the main entrance. Parents should arrive by 3pm to receive their children. In Kindergarten, we work hard to do hand off directly to the parents, so when you see your child, please approach the yellow gate and the teacher will release your child.

  • Walkers: Walkers are dismissed beginning at 3:10pm. In grades 1-2, walker dismissal is from the main entrance and an adult must be present for students to be released. In grades 3-5, walker dismissal is from the exit near the gymnasium and students listed as a walker will be released without an adult to receive them. In the first weeks, please have your STUDENT PICKUP TAG when you pick up your child to expedite dismissal.

  • Bus Riders: Bus riders will gather in the gymnasium and students board buses as they arrive. An adult must be at the bus stop to meet K-1 students; if an adult is not there, the student will be sent back to school PRIOR to 4:00 PM and AFTER 4:00 PM, they will be sent to the district office at 13A Dickinson Avenue, Nyack. Families of students on buses that leave more than 15 minutes after their normal release time will be notified of a late departure.

  • Car Riders: Students whose parents will be picking them up by car will wait in the main hallway to be dismissed from the central door at UNES.
