Cape's Mission & Vision
Vision: We believe that the most promising strategy for achieving the mission of Cape Elementary is to develop our capacity to function as a professional learning community.
Dear Cape Families,
We wish all of our Cape families a happy new year filled with hope and promise. We hope everyone took time to relax and enjoy each other over winter break.
Exciting times are ahead for our Cape students in 2019! We will be ready to make 2019 a year filled with success through hard work and dedication by providing students with daily opportunities to learn and grow. We shoulder the work together – administrators, teachers, staff, students and families. Thanks for partnering with us in this venture!
January is a busy month for our school. Please take a look at the school calendar in this newsletter, in the back of your child’s planner, or on our website. We especially look forward to seeing you at our Student-Led Conferences on Thursday, January 17. We also have a new PTO fundraiser, a Fun Run!
We are already planning for the 2019-2020 school year. We will have a Kindergarten Open House on Tuesday, January 15 from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. in our library. We will also have school tours in January and February. Please invite your neighbors and friends with elementary school–age children to participate in these activities. We want to share with our community all the great things we do at Cape each day.
Our intensive classes are always in need of snacks, books and school supplies for their students. We appreciate any donation for these students. Please drop off at the office anytime.
Cape will communicate using School Messenger starting this month for events and emergencies. Please make sure we have your correct phone number and email address. Information about School Messenger and Peachtree are included in this newsletter.
Cape is a special place. We are thankful for our students, staff and parents. Please call us if you have any questions or concerns. We are happy to assist in any way we can.
Sincerely,
Nicole Osterholm and Kristi Sund

Dress Code Policy
As we start the 2019 school year please keep in mind the Lee County School District Dress Code Policy. We appreciate your support with sending your child to school each day following the policy below.
Students at Cape Elementary encourage one another through positive examples in appearance and behavior. This helps create an environment where all students can learn and grow together. No students will be permitted to wear clothing that disrupts or interferes with the educational process. Guidelines for appropriate dress are listed below.
· Wear safe and protective closed-toe shoes. The following types of shoes are not permitted at school: sandals, flip-flops, high-heel shoes, open toe shoes, platform shoes, shoes without backs, shoes with wheels. Crocs with backs are acceptable.
· Wear clothes that are your size. Fasten pants at your waist or wear a belt as needed.
· Pants must not extend beyond the shoe.
· Skirts and shorts must be at fingertip length or longer. No leggings or bike shorts worn as pants unless a pair of shorts or shirt is worn that is fingertip length or longer.
· Transparent or see-through tops, bare midriff, strapless, low-cut clothing or tops and outfits that provide minimum coverage or are of a suggestive nature are prohibited.
· Halter tops, backless dresses or tops, tube tops, spaghetti strap tank tops or any clothing which may be distracting are prohibited. Tank tops may be worn but must be three finger width wide at shoulder.
· Undergarments should not be visible.

January Counseling Corner
Our Quarter 2 Seymour’s Reindeer Games was a GREAT success! Thank you to our volunteers and teachers for supervising the fun! Of the 673 students currently enrolled at Cape Elementary, 615 students were able to attend the Q2 Seymour’s Reindeer Games Celebration! That is 91% attendance!!!!
Of the 58 non-attenders, 21 were unable to attend due to referrals, missing work, bus, or other behavior, and 37 were unable to attend due to not making their AR goal. There were only six repeaters from Q1: One in second grade, one in third grade, and four in fourth grade. Our Quarter 3 celebration will take place on March 14. Keep encouraging your students to follow those SOAR Expectations!
Thank you to our community partner Cape Coral First United Methodist Church for providing Christmas gifts for 17 of our families! Over 45 children received gifts thanks to the church’s generosity.
The district-wide character word for January is Commitment. This involves binding yourself to a course of action despite obstacles. The district’s quote for the month is, “Commitment is what transfers a promise into reality.”
Please take time during the break to relax and re-energize yourself for the second half of the school year. How often do you sit down and look at how your time is being spent? Time is a valuable commodity, and as we look at the character word for the month, it is worthwhile to ask yourself, “Do I make promises and keep them?”
Many people make resolutions at the beginning of a new year. It is important to evaluate the previous year and look at areas where there is room for improvement, but what happens when we break a resolution and struggle with falling back into old habits we have resolved to change? Is it okay to give up? This is where commitment comes in. Commitment is what carries us through when our resolve begins to fade. Families commit themselves to many things throughout the school year, and as the year progresses, sometimes those commitments can feel like burdens. Often, it becomes necessary to determine which obligations are worthy of a commitment, and how we handle these obligations can teach our children a very valuable life lesson. Determining the level of commitment you are willing to uphold before making the commitment is a necessary first step for any venture.
As we are presented with opportunities to become involved, remember to be careful with your time, and if you commit to projects and activities, your children are watching to see if your promises are binding.

Attendance Matters....Did You Know?
As we move into cooler weather for Southwest Florida here are some helpful tips.
· Chronic excused and unexcused absences can make it more difficult for students to keep up especially in reading, so try keeping students home only when necessary.
· Provide student with warmer clothing during cooler mornings and days.
· For students with asthma have an action plan completed by the student’s doctor. Make sure the school has doctor/parent permissions and supplies (inhaler, spacer, etc.) needed to help manage the student’s asthma.
· For students with diabetes the school needs a diabetes management plan by the doctor. Make sure the school has doctor/parent permissions and supplies (insulin, blood sugar meter, test strips) needed to help manage the student’s diabetes.
· Please keep in communication with the school. Please contact school social worker and school nurse regarding any attendance or health concerns. We definitely want to help parents and students.
School Messenger & Peachjar Flyers-Communication is Key!
Gentle Reminder regarding our communication methods with our families.
Parent Link has been replaced by School Messenger. All contact from Cape Elementary (and the school district) will now come from School Messenger. We use School Messenger to deliver upcoming event information as well as for emergency situations. It is imperative that we have your correct phone numbers and email addresses in order for you to receive these messages. Please contact our front office or your child's teacher to update this information. Updated information should be provided in writing, either in your child's planner or by email.
Peachjar: The School District of Lee County is furthering their commitment to “going green” by moving to an electronic flyer (eflyer) system called “Peachjar.” The initiative will save our schools paper, reduce copy costs and remove a significant administrative burden from teachers, office staff and volunteers. You are now able to view information about school activities, enrichment opportunities and community events online. In addition, they will be sent directly to your email.
You should have received a welcome email from Peachjar that includes a username and password. This was provided to give you the opportunity to manage your account and flyer delivery preferences. This system is used exclusively for distribution of school-approved flyers. Your email address will not be shared or used for any other purpose. You will also be able to access the flyers on your school’s website, just look for the Peachjar icon.
Thank you for supporting our efforts to ensure that you are well informed about school and community programs, activities, and events.
