Recognize your mindset, what you say matters.
When interacting with your children, be mindful of your own thinking and of the messages you send to your children with your words and actions.
By telling your child to calm down, are you conveying that it's not ok to be upset? We all go through emotions and feelings throughout the day, and need time, space and practice to work through those feelings while learning how to self- calm. Children need help to learn how to regulate those emotions through the help of an adult.
Here are some examples of positive language alternatives you can use to support your child as they experience challenging emotions throughout the day.
The power of yet
If your child is discouraged that they are not able to work through a problem, remind them that they just have not figured it out YET. Encourage them; if you listen, learn and practice, you will reach your goal.
