Oak Hills Newsletter

December 4, 2020

Assistant Principal's Message

Dear Oak Hills Families,

Welcome back to school! We hope that you were able to spend some time with family, in person or virtually, over the break last week. In classrooms, students are sharing about their winter family traditions and the ways social distancing protocols are necessitating a more creative approach during 2020.

Our school counselor, Shelly Ray, shared an article with staff from the Child Mind Institute. The article addresses some of the shifts families are experiencing this year in keeping or doing away with long-standing traditions. The article acknowledges the emotions that accompany change and offers some suggestions of ways we can reframe our thinking, establish new traditions, and support family members who may be feeling disappointment. We hope that you find this resource helpful!

Oak Hills Food Drive- Wednesday Dec. 9th &16th

During the month of December, Oak Hills will host an annual Food Drive for the Sunshine Pantry! The Sunshine Pantry is a local organization, supporting Washington County families (500+ monthly) with food, toiletries, and clothing.

We will be accepting donations on Wednesdays (12/9 & 12/16) during Oak Hills School Supply/Book Pick Up (via the Oak Hills bus lane) and at the Oak Hills Book Bus stops.

PLEASE CHECK EXPIRATION DATES: Oregon Agriculture Department requires all food collected to be within the labeled expiration date. Approximately 30-40% of foods collected by local food pantries previously had to be disposed of because it was expired. During inspections, if food pantries are found to have 10 or more outdated items, they must close for a complete inventory. We ask that expiration dates are checked carefully. Thank you for your help in keeping Sunshine Pantry open to serve the local community!

Most needed items include canned tuna, dried pasta or beans, and peanut butter. In addition to non-perishable food items, we can accept hams or turkeys for the holidays.

We will be hosting a friendly competition between our primary grade levels (grades K-2/Primary ALC) and our intermediate grade levels (grades 3-5/Intermediate ALC). When dropping off items, please indicate which grade levels you would like your donation to support!

Immunization Exclusion Day Information

The Immunization Exclusion Day for 2020-21 is scheduled for February 17, 2021.

All children who are not up to date with their immunizations will be excluded from being physically in the building.

We know that with the COVID-19 protocols in place, getting your child/children up to date with their immunizations may require some advanced planning. You may even be hesitant to go to a doctor's office. We, also, know that with the current distant learning your student is not physically in the building. We do want you to know that when public schools return to in school learning at any capacity and if your child/children are not current with their immunizations they will not be able to be physically in the building.

When this happens, you would have several options available to you:

  1. become current with immunizations.
  2. remain in CDL.
  3. notify us if you are exempt from the immunization schedule with an official document.

We'd like to make you aware that between now and exclusion day you will be receiving several communications from either us in the office, from the District, or from Washington County. If you are current and you still receive a notification, then please let us know so we can align our communication to better match your child's immunization records.

Oak Hills School Photography- RESCHEDULED for 3/3/2021

Oak Hills Elementary School Picture Day has been RESCHEDULED for Wednesday, March 3rd from 9am- 6pm in the gym. In mid-February, we will send out details of this event and a revised Sign-Up Genius link to reschedule appointments. We appreciate your patience as we navigate evolving safety measures for group gatherings.

Wednesday School Pick Up/Drop Off Days Traffic Plan

With the rainy season approaching, we are trying out a new traffic plan for our Wednesday Pick Up/Drop Off events, to prevent rain and water damage to classroom and library books. Our current system of pop up tents was not effective during the periods of windy, sideways rain we experienced on Wednesday.

Instead, we would ask that you enter the parking lot through the main entrance, travel through the parking lot to the exit, turning right to access the bus lane from the parking lot. We will be set up to distribute books and learning materials from the bus lane at the side of the building.

Having families access the bus lane through the main parking lot will direct any waiting lines away from neighborhood roads and prevent a difficult traffic merging situation from occurring.

Thank you for your patience as we work through adjustments to our system!

Oak Hills Staff Favorites

Each year, we receive a number of requests from families wanting to know personal preferences of Oak Hills staff members, if they are choosing to share their appreciation with small gifts. Please know that your gratitude (in the form of an email, a card, or a short note) is enough to brighten the day of our amazing staff!

We have assembled a slide deck of Oak Hills Staff Favorites that we keep on hand in the school office (for our use) during Teacher Appreciation and other celebrations throughout the school year.

Thank you for your desire to share your thanks and appreciation! Likewise, we would like to extend our deepest appreciation to YOU for partnering with us this year under challenging circumstances. YOU are going above and beyond, as parents, grandparents, neighbors, and care providers, in order to ensure our students at Oak HIlls are engaged in learning each day to the greatest extent possible. We can't thank you enough for your time, your care for our students, and the support for our work as educators!
