WE WELCOME YOU...
The executive team members of GLASW are honored to serve the most AWESOME FAMILIES on the planet. While working alongside the most AMAZING STAFF in the city, it is our goal to meet the needs of each of our scholars. This year is bound to be an amazing school year as we continue to provide academic experiences for our scholars that are engaging, relevant and second to none. It is important to us that everyone who steps through the doors of our campus is excited to be here! This includes faculty, scholars, staff, and parents. This year, we are focused on demonstrating Excellence and Performing at a High level in all that we do.
With that being stated, our 2018-2019 theme is “High Performance...At The Throne Of Excellence". As a community of learners, we are working to ensure that all scholars, teachers and staff this year embrace a growth mindset and a great desire for EXCELLENCE. We believe that just as it is important to teach reading and math skills, it is equally important to teach our children about mindset. Our goal is to develop learners who persevere in their pursuit of learning and goal attainment. It is our desire to provide scholars with the tools they will need to be successful in learning as well as in the community. We look forward to partnering with you in this effort!
Please know that your child's academic learning and social emotional growth is of utmost importance to us here at GLASW. We recognize that as parents, you play an important role in your child's education. Therefore, we invite you to take an active role in your scholar’s learning experience by:
- Collaborating with your child’s teacher(s) in order to establish a healthy and successful relationship
- Maintain open communication to ensure a successful partnership throughout the year
- Commit to increasing your parental engagement and involvement for the 2018-2019 school year by meeting our parent goals for the year
Educationally Yours,
Dr. Naomi Johnson Booker, Executive Director
Mrs. Tamika M. Evans, CEO/Principal
Mr. Bar-rae J. Choice, Assistant Principal
ADMISSION
Scholars are expected to arrive to school by 8:00AM Each Day
BREAKFAST
Scholars who wish to eat breakfast at GLASW must arrive by 7:55AM.
LATENESS
Our morning routines are critical for scholar achievement. Scholars are expected to be in school by 8am in order to fully participate in Harambee. Please ensure that your scholar is on time each day. After 8:15AM scholars will be marked late. This year we are closely monitoring lateness and attendance and will be setting up truancy meetings with parents whose children consistently arrive to school late.
DISMISSAL
Kindergarten dismissal is at 3:45p and 1st-8th Grade dismissal is at 4:00p. All scholars must be picked up promptly.
LATE PICKUPS
Late pickups of scholars is a chronic concern for GLASW. A fee of $10.00 every 15 minutes will be assessed after 4:15PM for any scholar picked up late. On early dismissal days the fee will start after 1:15PM. Fees are due upon pickup. School trips, incentives, and scholar records may be affected by outstanding fees owed.
FULL UNIFORM
All scholars are expected to dress in full GLASW uniform daily. This includes black school shoes. Every Friday is fitness Friday at GLASW and all scholars are expected to be in full GLASW gym uniform. Gym uniforms must be worn with black sneakers - no exceptions!
PARENT GOAL #1 ATTENDANCE MATTERS
ALL SCHOLARS ARE EXPECTED TO ATTEND SCHOOL AT LEAST 95% OF THE TIME. POOR ATTENDANCE PATTERNS LEAD TO LOST INSTRUCTIONAL TIME AND SIGNIFICANT LEARNING GAPS.
GROWTH MINDSET AND THE POWER OF "YET"
As a school we are learning about growth mindset and the Power of Yet. We encourage you to support us in this effort to build confident scholars who are willing to take risks, make mistakes, and problem solve. This parents guide to growth mindset gives tips on how we can reframe our language to embrace a growth mindset.
Hello families! Welcome to another year of learning at Global Leadership Academy Southwest, where we will be pushing our scholars to achieve even more in mathematics! This is where I come in; my name is Julia Oas and I have been teaching at GLASW for two years. Previously, I was a first and second grade teacher, but this year I will fill the position of Math Interventionist. I am working to enhance the math instruction of every classroom in our building as I also support individual scholars who are struggling in math. This might mean providing additional interventions inside the general classroom as well as working more closely with scholars to advance math skills. If your scholar has been selected to receive additional math intervention, please expect me to contact you in the near future so that we can collaborate on your scholar’s math needs. I look forward to a year of growth and high achievement with all scholars at GLASW!
