PUBLICOLOR AFTER SCHOOL & ON SATURDAYS!
Paint Club is an after-school youth development program. We use evidence-based strategies to encourage a greater sense of school community, safety and a sense of pride and ownership. We focus on building resiliency, self-esteem, and increase civic engagement in students while teaching the marketable skill of commercial painting as they paint energy and life into NYC public schools.
In Paint Club, students spend Tuesday through Friday afternoons and all day Saturday learning the basics of commercial painting while they paint warm, inviting colors in public areas of their school. In the process, students learn creative problem-solving, leadership and teamwork- important skills that are transferable to success in school, career and life.
Research has shown a strong relationship between school connectedness and educational outcomes, including school attendance, staying in school longer, and higher grades and classroom test scores. Paint Club brings students, adult volunteers, teachers and parents together on a school-wide service initiative that has a lasting impact on the community.
Who is the ideal Paint Club participant?
The program is open to all students in the campus but has made impactful connections with:
- Students who do not find typical after-school programs appealing (sports, dance, music) but would respond to hands-on learning
Publicolor Paint Club FAQs
How long does the program last and how many students participate?
The programs lasts for approximately 10 weeks and typically attracts 75-100 students
What areas of the school get painted?
Paint Club students paint the shared spaces of the school that will have the greatest impact on community and morale. Those include cafeterias, auditoriums, foyers, gyms, hallways and stairwells.
How are the colors chosen?
Color selection is done initially by the burgeoning Paint Club under Publicolor staff guidance and this is followed by a school-wide vote. We always show the winning combinations to weigh in.
Is there a volunteer component?
Yes! Every Saturday and on some weekdays, corporate and community volunteers (parents, teachers, etc.) paint alongside students. We see this as a tremendous mentoring opportunity that is an integral part of the program. We encourage the volunteers to talk about their jobs and the education they needed to do their work and students to talk about their interests, so that volunteers can suggest career options.
How are students kept engaged after the school transformation?
Publicolor will induct 20 students that need us most and the MVP (Most Valuable Painter) into our long-term continuum of programs. These students will attend weekly workshops at our office near Herald Square on 36th Street and paint each Saturday. Program includes mentoring, tutoring, college, career and life skill workshops, college tours and museum visits.
Wheelchairs Against Guns (WAG)
In partnership with Wheelchairs Against Gun Violence (WAG) the Office of Safety and Youth Development TAPCo will be offering free student presentations on Gun Violence Prevention. We will further educate our students about the negative effects of bullying, gangs, and violence.
