Community Schools Corner
2021-2022 FIRST EDITION: December 10, 2021
We have arrived!
Dear OUSD Community,
We're here to help the schools meet the physical, social-emotional and mental needs of our families, and allow our educators to focus on helping our students succeed academically.
We're here and know our schools and communities are strong, resilient, and talented. With the help of students, caregivers, staff and community partners, together we will keep moving forward and "maximize our student's wellbeing."
What is a Community School?
Community School Transformation Pillars:
Integrated student supports (Include student academic, physical, social-emotional, and mental health support resources)
Enrich and expand learning opportunities (New and improved programming and services)
Family and community engagement (Provide safe and inviting environment for students, families, and the community as partners)
Collaborative leadership and practices (Share decisions and duties)
Together, we all can help our students succeed by addressing the unique strengths, needs, and interests of students as they engage in learning.
OUSD - Leading the way
Why are community schools important?
California Community Schools Partnership Program: A Transformational Opportunity for Whole Child Education
The investment in the California Community Schools Partnership Program provides an opportunity to transform schools into community hubs that deliver a whole child education. This brief examines key elements of the new law. It then lays out evidence-based principles of high-quality community schools implementation that are grounded in the four research-backed pillars included in statute and aligned with the science of learning and development. It concludes with a discussion of the technical assistance needed for high-quality implementation.
Who are your Community School Coordinators?
Natalie Gibney - Libby Elementary
Josh Kohler - Laurel Elementary
Proud #GirlDad and husband. Graduated from BYU with a degree in Spanish & Portuguese and previously was a Family Resource Center Coordinator. A fan of spicy food, the Portland Trail Blazers, yard work and dad jokes. I could literally eat pizza everyday and be happy. Personally and professionally, ‘family’ is the highest priority. Taking care of family is what brought me here, and helping families meet their needs is how I’ll be serving here as Community School Coordinator.
Jackie Martinez - Jefferson Middle
Rosana Martinez - Mission Elementary
After earning my Bachelor's Degree in Liberal Studies from California State University, Long Beach I entered the world of expanded learning, after-school programs as an organizational innovator and advocate for youth. Most recently in my career I dedicated my passion to the well-being of student and families in Orange County through the practice of family and community engagement. My favorite hobbies are spending time with my family, going on hikes, and exploring new places. My husband and daughter mean the world to me and we spend as much time together as we can. My husband and I coach our daughter's softball team during the week and you can usually find us at the ballpark on Saturday mornings. Fun fact about me: I attended Mission Elementary, Jefferson Middle School and Oceanside High School! I look forward to connecting with you, families, and the community to support the wellbeing and success of our students.
How does research support community schools?
In the Guide for Action, the capacity to transform schools into student- and family-centered community hubs that provide a whole child education is fully outlined. Careful attention to evidence-based implementation principles, along with strong community involvement, will play a key role for all of us in realizing this vision. We will actively seek and want your input throughout this transformation.
